Review – All Chained Up (Devil’s Rock #1) by Sophie Jordan

There are bad boys and then there are the men of Devil’s Rock . . .

Some men come with a built-in warning label. Knox Callaghan is one of them. Danger radiates from every lean, muscled inch of him, and his deep blue eyes seem to see right through to Briar Davis’s most secret fantasies. But there’s one major problem: Briar is a nurse volunteering at the local prison, and Knox is an inmate who should be off-limits in every way.

Knox feels it too—a shocking animal magnetism that drives him to risk his own life to protect Briar’s. Paroled at last, he tries to resist her. She’s too innocent, too sweet, and she has no idea what Knox is capable of. But a single touch can lead to a kiss—and a taste . . . until the only crime is denying what feels so right . . .

“When the prison doors are open, the real dragon will fly out.”—Ho Chi Minh

After reading the blurb, I was thinking that I’d be drawn to this like a moth to a flame. Ehhhh. I guess the set up took a little longer than I anticipated because I wasn’t really interested in this until roughly 15% in. Not long in the bigger scheme of things, but…ehhh.

Once the “suspense” actually took place, I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough to see what was coming next. That is until about 75% in when things started to just…move…slower…than I hoped. Don’t get me wrong. I enjoyed it. I just think it could have been a shorter read. Especially once we all knew what was going to happen.

Knox is serving time in jail for a crime he doesn’t regret. Well, he wouldn’t do it again, but technically if you’re going to go to jail for murder, his reason was a little more “justified” than others. He’s already served his 8 years and was hoping to get paroled, only to be denied his initial request. After a fight, he finds himself in the HSU (basically the hospital for inmates). It’s there that he meets Briar. A Nurse who is volunteering her time, helping her boss with charity work.

Briar never thought that she’d be volunteering her time in a prison. Working in a Family Practice office with normal hours was something she got used to. Especially after the past she’d lived through. Locking eyes with an inmate was definitely not something she would have thought would happen, but now she can’t keep her mind off him. She absolutely never thought that an inmate would end up being her night in shining armor, but that’s exactly what he ends up being.

Yes, there is chemistry. Yes, there is good sex scenes. Yes, there is enter personal turmoil that both Briar and Knox need to work out. Could this have been a shorter book? I think so, but it was still entertaining for the most part.
