Review: Embrace the Night (The Heroes of New Vegas Book 2) by Colleen Gleason

Everything they knew is gone...

Five men emerge from the remnants of destruction with extraordinary new powers.

They are humankind's last hope, but they cannot survive this devastated world alone.

Simon Japp's violent past will haunt him forever. But when he somehow travels through time to a dark future where civilization is all but destroyed, he sees an opportunity for redemption.

As he becomes familiar with this new, overgrown world of jungle-like cities and overgrown shopping malls, Simon is determined to help the Resistance movement against the immortal Strangers--the repressive, controlling race that has taken over civilization. He can't afford to be distracted, even by the beautiful, soft-spoken woman who haunts his thoughts.

Sage Corrigan is the product of a rigid cult that has militant initiatives to repopulate the world in order to rebuild civilization. She's learned not to trust, but there's something about Simon and his empty, haunted eyes that tug at her heart.

When they must pose as husband and wife to infiltrate the cult, they find that their staged affection is only hiding the real heat boiling beneath the facade....and when Simon must confront his past once again, he must make a decision between what's right...and what his heart desires.

300 Review

No sooner did I finished the first book in The Heroes of New Vegas series then I immediately dove into Embrace the Night. It’s just as exciting, if not more than, the first book. Book one was all about ‘OMG what happened!’ for the five guys from the past. Book two feels like a aftershock. How did we get here and how we survive? The who/what’s/why’s are keeping me up all night reading.

Simon and Sage. Why am I not surprised they end up together. They both have pasts they would rather forget. Both assured in their skills but neither are exactly able to fit into the lives they find themselves living. Yes these two go together like peas and carrots. Their romance is a entertaining one for me. Watching things unfold between them is sweet at times and at others I found frustratingly funny. And when they pose as a married couple to try to find info to help the Resistance, you just knew things were going to get interesting. A note on the romance, or lack of thereof, I see some people griping about in other reviews. This is a rough, sometimes violent new world. If you honestly think sexy, steamy romance would be dripping off the pages, then you’re crazy. This is a world where people are trying to survive and I can’t help but feel Ms. Ware has hit the right amount of romance in this post-apocalyptic story.

Here’s what I’m truly enjoying about the series; everything is still a mystery. Colleen Gleason has created this amazing world and instead of spelling everything out right away, you get to experience it with the five guys from the past. It’s so easy to feel their shock and surprise as each piece of the new civilization they find themselves in is exposed for what it once was. Envy – NV – New Vegas – Las Vegas. As in life, there are no clear simple answers here. As one layer of the story is exposed, there are still more unanswered questions. The allure of the mystery, the unknowing and the surviving will keep me coming back for each book in this series. I really don’t mind that I’m still kept guessing at the end of each book. I don’t feel like I have a lingering cliffhanger hangover instead I’m excited to discover what happens next. Maybe it’s because I live in Cali and I’ve had hanging over my head all my life the ‘Big One’ can happen at any time. Is this what survival will be like after? Would I make it in this new world? Although, it seems to be a moot point since California has fallen off the face of the earth and is now below the Pacific Ocean.

Note: The Heroes of New Vegas was formerly written as Joss Ware, and known as The Envy Chronicles which is where I first read this book.
