Review: Learning To Love Cats by K.M. Mahoney

It isn’t exactly a match made in heaven.

Mike isn’t much of an animal lover, but his sister insists every little boy needs a pet. Which is how Mike finds himself sitting in a veterinary office, trying to explain the facts of life to his six-year-old nephew while holding a dead hamster in a shoebox. It’s not one of his finer moments. So of course, that’s when he encounters the cute, shy and utterly lust-worthy Riley Laytham.

Riley isn’t used to guys flirting with him, and he definitely didn’t expect it to happen at the local vet office. In the kennels, no less, surrounded by cats and dogs and under the close scrutiny of one overly inquisitive little boy.

Their first date is a disaster. They have nothing in common, and Riley’s cats seem determined to end the budding relationship before it can get started. For some reason, though, Mike is sticking around despite cat scratches, rampant allergies, and nosy siblings. Now Riley just has to decide if he can make it work with a guy who staunchly declares that he doesn’t like cats.

300 Review

Once upon a time, I use to devour novellas. Nowadays I like my books to be a bit beefier. However, if a title catches my eye, and the blurb is interesting enough, I may wander back for a quick read. That is the exact reason I picked up Learning to Love Cats.

As you can tell by the page count, this book is a very quick read. What it lacks in length it makes up for in cuteness. The blurb really does explain it all but here is a quick rundown. Mike is at the vet with his four-year-old nephew and his very dead pet hamster where he meets cat breeder Riley. Mike is outgoing, where Riley is shy. Riley finds Mike attractive and impulsively tries to talk Mike into one of his kittens. Mike equally attracted to Riley, considers the kitten, more for a means to see Riley again. Business cards are exchanged, and so it begins.

The story is just so darn cute and quirky. Cat disasters, nosy families, dead hamsters help keep this quickie very entertaining. Besides the fact, Mike and Riley are so funny and sweet. There’s quick snappy dialog between these guys and even though Riley seems to be on the shy side, I think it’s less shy and more easily blushes. They find themselves quickly in very naughty situations, which had me laughing. Okay, so everything happens fairly quick from hello, to bumping uglies, and finishing with a insta-love HEA. It still made for a real good read. And that cover, uh huh…loved it, too.

Thanks to Learning to Love Cats, I have a new M/M author on my radar. I took a quick peek at author K.M. Mahoney’s other books and oh look, DRAGONS! I love dragons. I definitely think  there will be more of this author’s books in my future. For now, I recommend reading Learning to Love Cats
