Review: Reap (Scarred Souls #2) by Tillie Cole

Raised as a prototype for the Georgian Bratva's obedience drug, 221 fails to think, act, or live for himself; he's his master's perfectly-crafted killing puppet. Standing at six-foot-six, weighing two-hundred-and-fifty pounds, and unrivaled in to-the-death combat, 221 successfully secures business for the Georgian Mafiya Boss of NYC, who rules the dark world of the criminal underground. Until his enemies capture him.

Talia Tolstaia dreams to break from the heavy clutches of Bratva life. She dreams of another life--away from the stifling leash of her Russian Bratva Boss father and from the brutality of her work at The Dungeon, her criminal family's underground death-match enterprise. But when she stumbles upon her family's captive who is more monster than man, she starts to see the man underneath. A powerful, beautiful, damaged man whose heart calls to hers. But sacrifices must be made--blood for blood...life for life...souls for scarred souls.

All Talia wants is a life of normalcy. The thing that everyone takes for granted is the one thing that this Bratva princess wants, anonymity. She has everything that most people want, the material things in life that most covet are the things Talia wants away from. She’s also tired of the blood, violence, and death. Her work within the Dungeon keeps her far too close to those things. During one of the fighting seasons lulls she seeks refuge in her family Hampton home. It should be deserted this time of year. She should have solace and solitude.

Luka is healing his wounds. He has stolen the rival Georgian mafiya boss’s prized pet, his fighter, his experimental drugged annihilator, 221. Luka has hidden the key to the start of his healing (221) in the basement cell of his parents Hampton home. 221 is out of his mind with the drugs that have forcefully been pumped into his body for over twenty years. He is a mindless killing machine that is going through cold turkey withdrawals in Talia’s basement.

Reap is a star dark crossed lovers story that surrounds mafiya feuds and old blood debts that have never been paid. Once Talia discovers what is hidden in the basement of her refuge she becomes obsessed. She knows who he is and all the reasons she should stay away from him, all the reasons she should hate him. She can’t help herself. No matter how much she tries to avoid him she just can’t stay away. She’s more than just drawn in, she’s wholly consumed by him.

It was impossible not to like 221. He and his twin brother were taken from the massacre of their entire family when they were eight years old for no other reason than some sick mafiya boss twisted enjoyment of their torture. Once the drugs leave his system readers are swept away with him discovering life away from his master. You just have to want the best possible life for him.

I really enjoyed that many of the chapters were told from Luka’s point of view. Twelve years of rage, torture, and abuse can’t be healed overnight if ever. He’s still struggling with life. He is struggling with everything but mostly his guilt over killing Anri and now seeking revenge for Anri. I felt that Luka’s page time really added to this installment of the Scarred Souls series.
