Review: Rule Breaker (Break on Through#1) by Harper Kincaid

Re-belle-ious, free-spirited Lauren Renwick has decided it’s time to trade her wings for roots. That means no more bad boys, no more foolish choices. Yet when she’s stood up on New Year’s Eve, her resolution to stick to her Mama’s Rules for Dating weakens. Especially when she spots sex-in-leather-and-tattoos, Jackson Sullivan.

One look at Lauren, and Jackson is hell-bent on getting her on the back of his Harley and riding straight for his bed. Their night together is an erotic rush that has a new word popping up on his horizon—forever.

Lauren tries to convince herself he’s just one last fling to get bad boys out of her system, yet she finds herself falling hard and fast for a man with a stalker ex and a meddling Irish family. Plus, he has zero chance of passing her uptight parents’ inspection.

Jackson has Lauren’s back, but if she wants all of his heart, she’ll have to meet him halfway—by ditching rules that hold her prisoner, and learning to stand up for what she really wants.

Warning: Contains several highly practical rules for dating—all of which will be broken in the most wicked ways possible, thanks to a domineering alpha male who knows what he wants and isn’t afraid to go after it...rules be damned.

Lauren is dressed up and ready for a night out with her boyfriend on New Year’s when he delivers the bad news, he’s getting back together with his ex. Since all her friends already have plans she decides to go out to a bar she’s never been to and have a drink. When Jackson Sullivan sees Lauren walk into his biker bar he knows he has to have her. Although Lauren fights the attraction at first since she wants to settle down and stop choosing the wrong kind of man (and she doesn’t assume that a sexy tattooed bad boy will be the right man) but eventually she gives in to Jackson and they burn up the sheets bringing in the new year. But just when she thinks that she’s had her first one night stand, Jackson throws her off by wanting to see more of her and making her feel like this bad boy could be just the right man for her.

I felt that this book was a bit rushed. There are a few times when blocks of time are skipped. I understand that this is a novella (or at least I am assuming so since it’s about 150 pages)but I am not usually a fan of skipping blocks of time unless we are segueing from the last chapter into an epilogue. We also have Lauren adamant about staying away from Jackson but as soon as he is close to her and gets a bit flirty she’s all ‘take me now’. I wish she had been more consistent.

I could have done without Jackson’s crazy ex altogether and would have enjoyed the book more if that page time was spent on the couple and them cementing their relationship. There is also a line that Jackson says to Lauren about her being his woman and the ex says it almost exact to Jackson about them and I’m with Lauren who thinks that he said the same thing to both women. Not to be spoiler-ish but he doesn’t even address it later and that really bothered me.

This is the first book in the series but I am on the fence if I will continue them. I am assuming they will focus mainly on Jackson’s friends and they were mostly all biker-esque men.
