Review: The Bite of Winter (Love Bites #1) by Lauren Smith

She is theirs to claim. They are hers to save.

Zoey Blake is about as far down on her luck as she can get. A car crash took her parents, leaving her destitute and on the street. When she’s attacked by another homeless person, her lifeblood drains away as her fading vision is filled with the face of a handsome stranger.

Ian Kennedy, a century old Irish vampire, never could resist rescuing a stray. As a few drops of his blood heals Zoey’s wounds, he realizes she’s a sweet, tempting, flesh-and-blood woman. But there’s one problem. Connor, who made Ian promise decades ago: no more mortal lovers.

After another vampire murdered his soulmate, Connor O’Shea swore never to let amortal woman pay the price for loving him. Until he feels Zoey’s skin and tastes her lips. She makes him want to break that vow.

Zoey finds herself caught in their web of seduction. But as Christmas draws near andher grief deepens, happiness seems far out of reach. And Ian and Connor join forces to prove their love is sacred, special…and forever.

Warning: This book contains two scorching-hot Irish vampires, one lady with plenty of pluck but zero luck, naughty lingerie, and enough Christmas cheer to redeem even the darkest creatures.

I am not a fan of Christmas romance books. I find them to be a double edge sword of emotion with one side of warm fuzzies and the other so depressing I turn into a sobbing pile of goo. Normally, I stay far-far away as possible. Recently, a very good friend of mine discovered author Lauren Smith, and told me I needed to read this author, her books are off the hook. Read. This. Author. Little did I know, I had that very author in my TBR pile and it was a Christmas novella. Go figure. So I cracked open The Bite of Winter and started to read.

This story starts off so sad, with Zoey being homeless. The struggles she is facing tears my heart out. Just when I don’t think it can get any worse, it does. I hate being right because now I’m sobbing. But in all this darkness a stranger comes to the rescue. Ian never could resist a stray and when he sees Zoey attacked he comes to the rescue. He isn’t quite a knight in shining armor considering he’s a vampire. Nevertheless, he heals her and takes her home. Which is a no-no since he promised Connor no more mortal lovers. The last soulmate they had was human and she was brutally murdered. Connor can’t take anymore loss, and has promised no one else would lose their lives because of his love. One delicious taste of her skin and it’s all he can do to resist her.

I really enjoyed all three characters. Zoey’s sweetness was the perfect counterbalance to Connor’s gruffness. Ian optimism I thought was going to be too much but as the story progressed, I found he was the Ying to Connor’s Yang. The heat between Connor and Zoey was steamy hot and I was beginning to think Ian was going end up being left out in the cold. That changed quickly and in a oh so yummy way. It isn’t all sex that made this novella work. The dynamics between Zoey, Ian and Connor plus the emotional roller coaster that author Lauren Smith took me on is what did it for me. Tears, smiles, gasps, sighs. Yes, my friend was right. Ms. Smith’s books are well worth the read.
