Review: The Widow Is Mine by Ashe Barker

Since her husband’s untimely passing, Lady Natalia has resigned herself to a quiet life as a young widow and perhaps one day as a nun. But her world is turned upside down when her adopted home is conquered and she is taken captive by Duke Stefan of Richtenholst.

Almost from the moment he sets eyes on her, Stefan cannot imagine allowing Natalia to languish behind the walls of a convent, and he makes no secret of his plans to take her as his bride. The duke is more than ready to compel his new wife’s obedience when it is necessary, but he wants much more than that. Can Stefan ever truly make Natalia his own, claiming her heart as fully as he has claimed her body, or will she forever see herself as no more than the spoils of war?

Publisher’s Note: The Widow Is Mine contains spankings, sexual scenes, and more. If such material offends you, please don’t buy this book. This book is also available as part of a five-book collection entitled The Conquered Brides

I pretty much swore off historical romances years ago because I like my female characters strong and my male hot. However, occasionally I will dip back into the genre, especially if it’s a book by one of my favorite authors. Since Ms. Barker has yet to disappoint me, I thought I would take a chance. Lucky for me, I enjoyed The Widow Is Mine.

Lady Natalia has had nothing but bad luck when it comes to men. Not as in ‘he beats me’ bad luck, more along the lines ‘they keep dying on me’. Any man that would want her better be healthy as a horse and fearless. Queue the hot hunky Duke Stefan. He comes in to conquer her home, and ends up rescuing her, and the next thing you know…MARRIED! Well, there is a bit more to it than that (Of course!) and I did find the circumstance behind the ‘weddings’ a interesting concept and one I hadn’t encountered before in historicals. Anyway, Natalia has a secret she is hiding and Stefan is determined to find out what it is. Their relationship is a interesting one. There’s a mutual attraction between them, even though being married was not what they really wanted they do manage to find a happy middle where they get their HEA. Not sure who ends up having the bigger surprise, her secret or his want for having a obedient wife. Either way, both parts of the story certainly keep things entertaining for me. Although, I just don’t get why she didn’t tell him the truth sooner. Oh well.

The heat level in this book is sitting around 3-4 Flames. There’s a little anal play, which would normally start cranking up the flames, but I felt it was mild compared to what Natalia has discovered a fondness for. Seems the fair lady is into having a flaming red behind, whether it’s by spanking, whipping or a fresh switch. Here Stefan is trying to compel his new wife’s obedience and discovers he has a pain slut on his hands. LOL!!!

The Widow Is Mine is a good read for you historical romance readers who like it hot and aren’t afraid of a good spanking. If spanking isn’t your thing, then you may not want to read this book. But if you are, be prepared to be entertained.
