ARC Review: Darkness Avenged by Alexandra Ivy with Interview

As the demon world celebrates the defeat of the Dark Lord, the vampire Santiago’s mood remains bleak. He still yearns for the sensual, raven-haired Nefri, who has inexplicably disappeared. But brooding for Nefri is a luxury that Santiago does not have. His traitorous sire, Gaius, is unleashing a violent scourge upon the mortal world, and Santiago must stop him before it’s too late...

To her dismay, the all-powerful Oracles have sent Nefri on her own mission to find Gaius, and failure is not an option. Nefri’s search leads her to the vampire’s abandoned lair—and straight into Santiago’s path. It’s clear Santiago intends to seduce her, but then an ancient, banished evil reappears, threatening to thrust the world into a madness it cannot survive...

Alex has squeezed so much awesome into this installment of her Guardians of Eternity series. It almost feels like two books in one. Readers are not only introduced to what I am assuming is the couple for the next book, but we are given an amazing amount of page time with that couple. I have to say I cannot wait to read their book. They are already intense. Their book is going to be out of this world! As for the main couple for Darkness Avenged I enjoyed them in Fear the Darkness so continuing Nefri and Santiago’s story was a pleasure.

Santiago to Nefri, “Oh, I haven’t even started my mauling. This is only a small taste of my pre-maul.”

Hello sexy alpha male that any woman would swoon into a puddle over. Santiago is a man that when he sees something that he wants he takes it. He doesn’t ask he just takes. In his long life he has grown used to getting exactly what he wants when he wants, except when it comes to Nefri. Nefri is not a woman that one just takes though. She is a powerful ancient that all kowtow to without question. Santiago luckily has enough sense to recognize her for who she is, but everything that makes him male also makes him notice who she is to him.

Nefri to Santiago, “Your lack of manners is only exceeded by you complete arrogance.”

Nefri has an intriguing history that once revealed answers so many questions about her and many of the Veil questions. Nefri is an alpha in her own right. She has accomplished things in her life that no other vampire ever will. The combination of that her time behind the Veil has left her different, changed, evolved, there are so many different labels that one can give her. Her request to the Commission to take her clan beyond the Veil makes so much sense. The Commission’s reason for the Veil is a whole new drama that added an immense amount of excitement to the book.

The Oracle Siljar tasks Nefri with the same job that Styx sends Santiago on. For the most part it is a clean-up job that has a derailment side job. It is 100% adventure. They have no desire to work together. The sexual tension is palpable. They want each other so badly they figure distance is the only way to prevent the inevitable. Their story is definitely at towards the top of favorites for the series.

I thoroughly enjoyed the entire witch (trying to be vague and spoiler free) side story and cannot wait to read more of that! From what I read it will be a heavy thread in the next book. The character involved is fascinating and the history is already lining up to be explosive.

The paperback ARC I received of Darkness Avenged has the Levet novella in it. I do not know if the retail mass market paperbacks will be the same, but it is definitely something to look into. If anything it would save you $2 if you were planning on buying both of the books anyhow.

The Guardians of Eternity series needs to be read in order from the beginning to get the most enjoyment out of it!

Vanessa: Would you please start by telling us a little bit about yourself?

I’ve always loved to read!!  But my love for writing actually came from the theatre.  I thought I would one day become a playwright.  It wasn’t until after I married and had my two sons that I realized I should write what I love to read…romance!!!

Marie: What books or authors have inspired your writing?

I started writing Regencies because of my love of Jane Austin.  I was bewitched by her clever wit and her ability to create a world of people you felt could be a part of your family.  And Darcy…sigh.  He was my first huge literary crush.

Liberty Ann: If you could spend a whole day with one of your characters, where would you go and what would you do? Details please! *wink*

Actually I would probably chose Levet, my naughty gargoyle J  I love sexy hunks as much as any red-blooded woman, but Levet is the character who always says what I wish I had the nerve to say, and who has the most outrageous belief in his own worth…he would be hysterical.

Liberty Ann: If I gave you a box with three items: Bungee cord, Nutella, and a Lolly Pop, what would you do?

Hmmm…I’d probably use the Nutella and Lolly Pop to lure the pack of boys who are always in my house outside and the Bungee cord to make sure my door wouldn’t open…at least for awhile.  A whole day without interruption sounds like heaven.

Lori: Do you have a favorite place to write? Do you set a daily writing goal?

I usually write in my office, but if the weather is nice I love to sit outside.  I live in the country so it’s always peaceful.  I do have a daily writing goal…I usually try for 10 pages.

Vanessa: What is one thing about you that your readers would find surprising or never guess about you?

I’m actually very shy J  When I go to conferences or book signings, or even online I try to be outgoing and interact with my fans.  But I really am most comfortable alone in my office.

Vanessa: Can you tell us about your current work in progress, perhaps you could share a favorite fact or piece of fascinating information it?

Predatory, will be released the first of May. This is a short introduction to my new series, The Sentinels.  The series will revolve around people who are ‘gifted’ with special abilities and the warriors who protect them.   Next up is Duncan O’Conner’s story.  He’s a hardnosed police detective who requests the services of Callie Brown, a high-blood necromancer, when a young woman is found murdered in her kitchen.  Callie’s skill allows her to view the last memories of the dead before the soul leaves the body.  Most cops consider it a gruesome talent, but Duncan isn’t so squeamish.  Callie has managed to solve a dozen murders over the past five years .   Besides, he can’t deny a fascination with the beautiful high-blood.  She stirs a passion in him that threatens to consume them both.

Gaele: Where do your ideas come from? Do you set out to ‘outline’ a plot and situations, or do you let the characters take you along for the ride, and clean it up later?

I never have a problem with ideas, they’re always bubbling in the back of my mind…like a cauldron J  But I do have to set out an outline.  I’m getting ready to write book 12 in the Guardians of Eternity series, which means I have a lot of characters and various storylines to keep track of.  To be honest, it’s exhausting J

Gaele: With all the characters you have created – are there any that you feel need to have another book or series to get their “story told”?

I do think I will write another book for Styx.  As the leader of the Vampires he has a lot of responsibility.  It would be interesting to see how he and Darcy are dealing with the stress on their relationship.  Or even Salvatore, the King of Weres.  He’s expecting a litter of ‘pups’ so it would be fun to see how he handles them.

Vanessa: I’m a bit of an author stalker and I love going to signings and conventions. Do you have any upcoming appearances?

I’ll actually be in France the end of May for a book festival, but I don’t have any conventions in the US until next year.  RT in New Orleans and Authors After Dark in August.
