This is the sixth book in the Colorado Mountain series. All the books can be read as stand alone novels. Many of the characters from previous books do briefly appear but you don’t have to read their books first.
I love Kristen Ashley’s writing! It is so different from every other author in the best way possible. Her characters are so original and real with problems that most everyone can relate to. In this book we have Emme and Jacob. They were close friends for years when Jacob was dating Emme’s best friend but when Jacob and the friend break up, Emme no longer sees him. She ends up cutting herself off from that friend as well since she is mad they are no longer together. Fast forward nine years and they run into each other and immediately set about picking up where they left off. However Emme is dating someone even though it’s not serious but that does put a hitch in Jacob’s plans since he has decided that he wants Emme.
Most KA books have a good deal of drama with violence and kidnappings, especially in this series, but I found it very refreshing that there was very little of that in this novel. We do have some drama as it wouldn’t be a true KA without it but it wasn’t al about that. It was more about the characters and how they come together and accept each other, faults and all, and grow into stronger people. Emme has more issues that Jacob but there were some things in her past that she hadn’t dealt with and I liked that Jacob wanted to help her address them but he didn’t assume he could fix her. He let her work through her issues and seek help where she needed it.
I loved how the kaleidoscope was almost a character in the story as well. The title makes complete sense after reading the book. Jacob has carried around a kaleidoscope that Emme gave him for nine years and it becomes almost a symbol of their relationship. I love how KA worked it in and out of the story and what she did in the epilogue was awesome and a total KA epilogue, as in awesome! I love reading epilogues to catch a glimpse of the main characters in their HEA and KA never disappoints. There were a lot of time advances in the story but they are all plainly stated and not usually very long (ie. two hours later, eight hours later, three days later ect) Many of those dropped us in on the couple mid-sex and while that is a typical KA move, sometimes I want to read about the sex from the get go and not just see the end. All KA’s sex scenes are smoking hot with alpha males taking control and I want to read about it all.
I loved the brief glimpses of the couples from the past books in the series and the nice little cameo from a character from another of KA’s series. I can’t wait to read the next book in the series which I am guessing will be about Deck. He had a very small part in this book but I believe he may be the last character left in this series that hasn’t had his HEA and that is unacceptable! Whatever book is next, I can’t wait to read it!
