Review: Mischievous Matchmaker series by Jayne Kingston

After years of living abroad, Rachel has returned to Chicago. As a welcome-home present, one of her best friends throws a seventies-style key party. A night of mingling and anonymous sex with one of Petra’s hunky friends seems perfect.

Petra knows about the crush Rachel had on Ben in college, and she rigs the game so Rachel ends up with the very fine young doctor. But Petra doesn’t know the whole story. Rachel never told her friend about the scorching-hot make-out session that is now Rachel’s go-to sexual fantasy.

And neither of them could know Ben is more than looking forward to showing Rachel every carnal moment she missed when she left without finishing what they’d started that night.

With just enough character development to make them easy to relate to, and a knack for secondary characters who spice up the story with their odd ways and funny commentary, Jayne Kingston presents a sexy and fun short sure to please many readers.

Rachel has recently returned to Chicago after leaving her job on a cruise ship and living in London. She left university after one year, and found another career working in massage. When her life fell apart in London, she returned to the states to make a new life and focus on therapeutic work.

She is sharing a house with her best friend, who also happens to organize monthly key parties for friends. It is at this first key party after Rachel arrived that she runs into her university crush, and former tutor Ben.

Ben is now a doctor, gorgeous and thoroughly intrigued by Rachel. In fact, he was always intrigued by her, we come to learn as the story progresses. Far from being a ‘luck of the draw’ event, the key party is Petra’s way to match up her friends with people she believes are compatible: with a perfect record her secret would have been safe had the puffy star sticker on Ben’s keys been removed.

From this point – the sex is delicious, but the story carries every ounce of heart and personality most often seen in longer contemporary romance stories. Ben and Rachel work well together, their conversations and openness is well-described and defined, and their emotional vulnerabilities are understandable and easy to relate to.

This is only about 100 pages, clever and quick with plenty of steam to please the reader.

Vanessa: Would you please start by telling us a little bit about yourself?

I’m your pretty standard, middle forty-something mother of three grown kids. I’ve held down a host of odd jobs from cashier to bartender to the worst server in the history of servers before I became a full-time writer. I’m a really slow reader, but I love to lose myself in a great book. I also love to knit, go to the movies, spend Sunday evenings with my family, and I’m a huge music lover.

Vanessa: Can you tell us about your current work in progress, perhaps you could share a favorite fact or piece of fascinating information about it?

Right now I’m working on a short story to tie up the end of the Mischievous Matchmaker series. There were only supposed to be three stories altogether, but someone said they would like to read about a couple of characters that originally just got an “Aw, aren’t they cute” type of mention at the end of Luck of the Draw. It really didn’t take much more than that for me to get inspired to write it.

Vanessa: Vanessa: If you could spend a day with any one of your hero’s where would y’all go and what would y’all do? Juicy details please!

If he wasn’t already taken by a sweet little blonde librarian, it would definitely be Jamie from Ink Lust. We would take our sweet old time riding his motorcycle through the South on our way to New Orleans. (I’ve never been, but would love to see.) He would know all the best places to eat and listen to music and go dancing. And because he’s Jamie no one would pick our pockets for fear of him stomping them to pieces.

Vanessa: Vanessa: Where is the strangest place you have found inspiration?

From a texting session with my best friend, who was with her daughter at a six-year-old’s birthday party. Apparently there was a terrible mermaid who had an even worse pirate sidekick who kept making smarmy faces at the mermaid throughout the party. Let’s just say it wasn’t too long before the texts had me laughing so hard I was crying, but the seed for a story idea was planted and stored away for future use.

Gaele: What is your favorite guilty pleasure?

Love songs from the 70s. I’m not kidding. I listen to the 70s Lite Rock Radio station on Pandora all the time.  Carol King, America, Kenny Loggins, Carly Simon, Dan Fogelberg. There’s just something about them that makes me happy. And they’re good for putting me in the right frame of mind for those falling in love moments when I’m writing.

Gaele: What is the first book that you remember reading more than once?

The very first that popped into my head was A Bargain for Francis by Russell and Lillian Hoban from when I was a kid. I love that story about Francis and her best friend Thelma, plastic and china tea sets and lessons learned in not scamming your friends.

As an adult the first book I went back for more than once was The Mummy by Anne Rice. Ramses the Great coming back to life with flowing hair and blue eyes??? Why yes, I will take another hit off that please.

Gaele: Three items that you cannot function without for a week?

Lip balm, coffee and—darn the salesman that wasn’t lying when he said I wouldn’t be able to live without it once I had one—my smartphone.

Gaele: What is the one thing that your readers would be surprised to hear about you?

I’m outwardly kind of a prude. My initial reaction to a lot of things is to gasp in shock, but then I’m all “oh yeah, that’s pretty hot/kinky/sexy” after a minute. There was a line early in The Good Wife series when Alicia’s brother tells her she’s “the most wanton prude” he knows, and I had to laugh at how much I could relate.

Jacque: What was your life like before becoming an author?

Wait… I used to have a life? Honestly, it’s no more or less busy than when I was just writing and submitting. Instead of submitting to multiple publishers and agents with the hope of someone deciding to publish me, that part has just been replaced by edits, deadlines and promotion. As far as my home life goes, it suffered a little until I learned to balance writing with family, but everyone was extremely supportive of me while I figured it out.

Jacque: What’s the silliest thing you have heard people say about you?

That I’m a snob. I’m horribly shy in new situations, and always have been. Apparently for a lot of people that translates into me being conceited. And that’s so not true that it’s laughable.

Bio:

When Jayne Kingston was growing up she spent many hours daydreaming about a time when she could flee the too-small town in Ohio where she grew up and run laughing for the sunny West Coast. Of course she stuck around and raised her family in that small town instead, and doesn’t regret it for a moment. Now she spends her days dreaming about the delicious fun two people can have while falling in love.

Mischievous Matchmaker Book 3

Turnabout is fair play. Or maybe karma is a bitch is more fitting.

Wanting to repay the favor she did for them, Petra’s friends throw her a key party to help her move on from a months-old heartbreak. While she is not interested in falling in love again, getting her stunted sex life back on track doesn’t sound like a bad idea.

Except someone sabotages the key drawing before she gets her turn. Instead of spending the night with the ultra-hot doc her friends intended to “accidentally” set her up with, she winds up drawing her good friend Alex’s keys instead.

A night with Alex is coveted among players. Petra quickly finds out the reality of Alex far exceeds his legendary reputation. The moment they kiss they discover a chemistry so combustible it’s positively nuclear. Instantly engulfed in a red-hot haze of passion, neither of them sees it coming when Petra’s ex returns, repentant and threatening to ruin their newfound happiness.
