Review: To Love a Cougar (Cougar Surrender #2) by Marisa Chenery

Book two in the Cougar Surrender series.

While shopping for lingerie, Harley finds something she can’t resist—sex on a stick in the men’s section. Intrigued and turned-on, she sets a plan in motion. If she can get him to size a thong for her to purchase as a gag gift, perhaps he might be willing to do other things for her too. Wicked things. Curl-her-toes things.

Cougar shifter Blaise is hunting—for human women, that is. His effort pays off in spades when he finds himself in the changing room with the beauty who captivated him the moment he saw her.

Their attraction is immediate, and it isn’t long before they’re burning up the sheets. But Harley soon finds herself embroiled in something she would never have imagined possible, with Blaise in the center of it. Despite what she may feel for him, it might not be enough to make her stay.

Blaise has decided that since his brother has mated to a human that he wants to start dating humans to find out if his mate is human as well.  He finds himself in a mall one Saturday and meets Harley in a women’s lingerie store.  They are instantly attracted to each other and once Blaise tires on the thong for her, the heat is on.

Blaise seems to be the joker of the family.  He’s always making people laugh and entertaining them with his jokes and antics.  He has a few serious moments but not too many. Harley is a lab technician so her job is serious but she is also very funny.  They have a similar sense of humor and while Blaise usually gets the last word, Harley gives as good as she gets.  Initially it was Blaise that wanted to approach Harley for a date but she beat him to it.  Same goes in the bedroom.  Harley often takes the lead, showing Blaise what she wants.  He will take back control after a while but he is comfortable letting her be in charge occasionally.

May main complaint with this novella was how fast it progressed and how the sex was approached.  Basically, Blaise and Harley meet in the morning at the mall and after he invites her to his place to ride horses (that’s not a euphemism, they actually ride horses).  After their ride, Blaise decides he wants her to stay the night so invites her back over after dinner (he has a family thing) and tells her to pack a bag to stay the night.  Now you may think, what’s wrong with this?  What’s wrong is that he lives in a house with his mother, father, brother, and sister in law.  And he talks to his mom about Harley sleeping over so they don’t get interrupted.  Also, the morning after, there is a big scene where all the family is together and Harley and Blaise basically ran into a room after throwing on clothes in a hurry and there is sexual innuendos and such being bandied about in front of the mom and she doesn’t mind.  I just found that odd.  I do understand that the cougar shifters have to have sex with members of the opposite sex often to discover if they are their mate however, I find that doing it in the family home to be somewhat strange.  It wasn’t a big deal that Blaise was inviting over a strange woman for sex.

Otherwise I did enjoy the story.  It felt very short but that may be because I enjoyed it so much and didn’t want it to end.  I liked how we got some answers to the questions that were posed at the end of the first book, Cougar Heat.  We still have a few dangling threads but with the world building and such in this one, I feel like I have a better grasp on the cougar shifters. This is the second book in the Cougar Surrender series.  While each book is about a different couple, most of the characters are reoccurring.  It would be more enjoyable to read the series in order.
