Review: Mating Brand (Mating Heat #3) by Laurann Dohner

Brand meets his dream girl in college—a half-human, half-snow leopard who’s too human to shift. Werewolves and cats are natural enemies, but the power of their sexual chemistry overwhelms them. Charma steals his heart and makes him whole…until she abandons him, fracturing his world. Brand knows no woman can ever take her place. Though many seek his attention, he is cold and unattainable.

The love they share is soul deep but the fate of Charma’s family lies in her hands. The memory of every heated touch will cut out both their hearts when she leaves, but to save them all, she must return to her pride…and to a man she loathes.

Now, after nine long years of desolation and heartbreak, Charma is back, risking her very life to warn Brand of an impending attack. He finally has her in his arms once more…and he’ll do whatever it takes to never lose her again.

This is a story about second chance love. Brand and Charma fell in love in college but Charma was keeping secrets. When Brand went for a run one day after they had a fight, he came home to find Charma gone and no way to find her. Nine years later they meet again and the love they felt is still there. There are still obstacles to overcome but one thing they know for sure, they don’t want to spend another nine years apart.

I really loved this story! I was pretty surprised by how much I liked it. I thought I would be so mad at Charma but her reasons for leaving were valid. I do think things could have been different if she was more honest with Brand when they first met but since she was pride and he was pack, her distrust made sense.

This is book three in the Mating Heat series and I feel they all stand alone. The main characters from the previous books are in this one as well but you won’t be lost if you come into book three first. I always suggest reading series in order just because you get a better understanding of the world and characters when you start at the beginning.

One thing I was pleasantly surprised with, and it’s not spoiler-y since Brand is very upfront from the beginning, was how accepting Brand was of Charma’s return and didn’t really even hold a grudge. The love he felt for her when they first met is still there, just as strong when they meet again. Same for Charma. She never thought that Brand would want her back but when she realizes that he is willing to accept her as she is, she is more than willing to jump back into a relationship with him. I was so happy to read about a couple that loved each other enough to accept all the crap that happened and not make it a huge drama about what happened in the past.

There are some little Easter eggs dropped about different characters; Von, Rave, Braden, Bree to name a few. I am excited to see where Dohner goes with this series next. The characters and possibilities are endless.
