A King’s Ransom is one of those sci fi romances that is set in a world that has an almost historical times long feel to it. The planet Panucia had advanced technologies at some point in its past, but now the leaders of the various territories has banned them along with space travel. Many of the rulers prefer the use of slaves and get their entertainment from gladiator games. People of the lower rungs of society get their monies where they can often selling their bodies for next to nothing. Some of the inhabitants are crueler than others, some of the kingdoms are kinder than some, some kingdoms are rumored to not even exist.

Surina has lived a good life. Her father has sheltered her from the atrocities that can be found on every inch of the city streets. He has educated her and encouraged her to be independant. Her kindness towards a slave that she has witnessed taking beating is about to change her life in ways she never could have expected. Surina is about to see first hand things she never imagined existing. She is going to discover the the evil things men will do in the name of greed and power. She will also find herself in the bed of a man who is much more than he admits to.

In an effort to right a wrong King Kritan goes on a mission to find his brother. He has a lead that takes him into a neighboring kingdom. Knowing the tension and animosities between the kingdoms he hopes to sneak in disguised, hiding his true identity. The mighty powerful king falls into a trap that puts him in a place he never expected to find himself and even further from his original objective. This strange turn of events also puts him into the arms of the one woman he never thought he’d want to find. Once Kritan has Surina he soon discover she is the one person he cannot live without.

The first book in Reagan Hawk’s Masters of Pleasure series is a fast paced read. It is filled with some very erotic sex scenes, a sexy guard that is more than he seems that you just have to know more about, kingdoms that do not get along that are on the verge of something big, and a bit of a political coup. I’m certainly looking forward to the next book in the series and I’m hoping that Reagan gives her readers some more page time with Rawlin.
