Review: Awakened by Fire (Dragons of Bloodfire #2) by Erin Kellison

Get lost in a world of danger, secrets, and desire in the newest installment of bestselling author Erin Kellison’s action-packed Dragons of Bloodfire series.

Billionaire dragon shifter and Bloodkin Triad member Warrick Voclain is no stranger to power. But when his trusted steward’s beautiful granddaughter—all grown up and successful in her own right—seems to be using illegal magic in his presence, he is thrown for a loop. And the fact that she’s doing so to protect him? Alarming.

Samantha Vine needs to stay under the radar, or her secret gift will get her and her granddad killed. She didn’t intend for her quick visit home to stretch into weeks in Warrick’s company, but anyone striking at Warrick would also hurt her granddad. Only she has the ability to see what’s coming…though she’ll need Warrick’s help to stop it.

The use of such magic is punishable by death, and Warrick’s position on the Triad requires that he adhere to the rule of law. But the attraction between them is electric, stirring his blood and straining his control.

Adversaries wait in every shadow, and the easiest way to strike down a powerful dragon is to go for the heart…in Warrick’s case, Samantha. With fire and blood, he’ll reshape the world into one that’s safe for her. And those that don’t bend to his will? They will burn.

I’m enjoying Kellison’s Bloodkin world. Her dragons are intense, greedy, and damn sexy. Warrick Voclain is young by dragon standards. He is commanding and has gained power and wealth through the usual Bloodkin channels. He is one of the Triad. He is also about to be put into an awkward position where one of his family’s Vine’s is concerned. Something was created behind his back with his unknowing assistance. Bloodkin Law requires him to destroy it. His dragon heart makes him want to hoard it away. His adversaries want it for the advantages that it can be used to gain.

When Samantha Vine returned the dragon castle that she grew up in she had plans of leaving immediately after her cousins wedding. Sammy’s grandfather made it very clear from the time she was born that dragon life was not for her, that it was not safe. Samantha’s secret gift is not so secret to one dragon and that dragon needs her to use her gift to discover who exactly the Voclain enemies are. The one person that Samantha loves most in this world, her grandfather is in constant danger just due to his proximity to Warrick Voclain. She is forced to stay near her grandfather and consequently her teen crush and use the gift she was required to keep secret to protect her family.

It was easy to fall back into the Dragons of Bloodfire world. The couple from the previous book (Tempted by Fire) has a miniscule role in this second installment of the series. The events that took place then are mentioned here in Awakened by Fire but have no consequences to what is going on in here. Things are changing in huge ways to the Triad and Bloodkin Law. The events of both books have seen to that. There’s a teaser at the end of the book about Seduced by Fire, the third book in the series.
