Review: Axel’s Pup (Werewolves & Dragons #1) by Kim Dare

As the landlord of The Dragon’s Lair and leader of The Black Dragons Motorcycle Club, Axel Carmichael has seen it all and done it all. He’s a respected and experienced dom. Nothing shocks him any more, and nobody catches him off guard.

When Bayden rides up to The Dragon’s Lair on a bike worth more than most men earn in a year, and immediately demonstrates that he has far more attitude than sense, it’s easy for Axel to write him off as a silly little rich boy who’s about to get himself killed.

But, there’s more to Bayden than meets the eye. He’s no silly little boy, rich or otherwise, and werewolves aren’t easy to kill.

WHEW! What a long book. I really didn’t quite grasp long 568 pages is until I kept. What can you do with book this long? You can take the time to fully develop a story and its characters which is exactly what Ms. Dare has done. No rushing through here, no short cuts. This story is slowly, carefully draw out so it’s easy to grasp everything. Thoughts, feeling, acts are spelled out, not always right away but eventually, clearly.

Axel, owner of the Dragon’s Lair, hot, sweet, caring, heart of gold, Dom. I could go and on. The man in charge without being a jerk about it. It is easy to see why he is respected by his friends. Bayden is a bit more complicated. Strong yet vulnerable. Axel takes on look at his bike and immediately assumes he’s a rich silly guy, slumming it for kicks but reality Bayden is more a victim of circumstance. And trying to survive.

There’s a whole slew of secondary characters that I both love and hate. Obviously, who likes the bad guy? There’s always evil people who take advantage of the law and power so think instead of calling them bad I’m going to call them opportunists. Then you have a bunch of stand ins that keep the story flowing. Some good, some not so much. Really they are just forgettable fillers if nothing else. Then there are the real secondary characters – A bunch of biker, Dom friends of Axel. I loved these crotchety guys. Sometimes they can be such jerks but deep down you know these guys are the real deal and you can’t help but adore them.

So pretty much this story is about how Axel and Bayden meet, interact and eventually how Bayden becomes Axel’s pup. I’d love to say that’s it in a nutshell but truth be told, there is a lot going on. Wolves are treated like second class citizens. Worse as there are so many laws they have to abide by with nothing to protect them. I had so many questions running through my head with all the whys. But, despite it all, there’s a beauty to the ugliness Bayden endures. Despite how horrible, how wrong it all is you know this wolf is a survivor. I think it’s because of Axel, how he takes the time to get to know and understand, help learn, help heal Bayden. Don’t get me wrong. There were times I was very frustrated with Bayden’s actions. As the story develops and unfolds all eventually become clear.

I’m not going to go much further in details than what I already have. I feel there are a lot of layers and unknowns that need to be experienced by a reader first hand without someone spoiling it for them. My advice to anyone who reads this book, is don’t give up. I know it’s long and there will be times you just want to give up and read a quickie. Don’t. Finish Axel’s Pup. Good things come to those who wait and this ending is very much worth it. It had be cheering and sighing.

This is my very first book by author Kim Dare. Looking at her other titles I see majority are not as lengthy as this book. I think it’s time to explore more books of hers. Fans, new and old, of Ms. Dare they are in for a real treat with Axel’s Pup. I’m highly recommending this one. One more thing, Axel’s Pup is part of a series. I really couldn’t see how the Werewolves & Dragons series was going to continue. Now that I have finished, I have my speculations on where this series is going. I’m REALLY hoping I am right. Can’t wait for the next book!
