Review: Bad Judgment by Sidney Bell

Embry Ford was a quiet, ordinary guy—until tragedy ripped his life apart. Now he's living under the radar, desperate to hide his identity and determined to learn the truth behind what happened. Even if that means working for—and bedding—a man he loathes.

As a bodyguard to a shadowy arms dealer, Brogan Smith knows distractions can kill as easily as a bullet. But when he sets his eyes on his client's sexy assistant, he can't get him out of his mind. Even more unnerving: the closer he gets to Embry, the more Brogan starts to suspect he might be protecting the wrong man.

Embry was sure nothing but vengeance would satisfy him—until Brogan offers him something far more tempting. Now Embry must choose: punish the people who nearly destroyed him or fight for a future with the man who has become his entire world.

Wow. Bad Judgment was a big surprise. It certainly was not what I expected. From the blurb, I see Embry is quiet, ordinary and out for vengeance. Brogan is a bodyguard to arms dealer and is tempting to Embry. I interpret that to being Brogan is tough and scary, Embry is not and they may on their way to a forbidden love. I could not be farther from the truth!

Let’s start with Brogan. He is exactly sweet and funny. He also isn’t just a bodyguard. He actually works for a security company where he and his co-workers are assign to protect Joel, the COO of an arms manufacture. Embry is Joel’s EA. The nicest way to describe Embry is that he is extremely good at his job. Loosely translated, he’s scary smart, doesn’t take crap and does not hesitate to speak his mind. The moment Brogan lays eyes on Embry his struck speechless. As Brogan goes about his duties protecting Joel, he comes to realize Joel is having an affair, and it turns out to be with Embry. A friendship begins between the two, but as Brogan gets to know Embry better, and works longer as a bodyguard, he begins to question Embry motives. Why is he with Joel? What secrets is he hiding?

I’m going to stop right there because I don’t want to spoil the story. Embry has many secrets that he is keeping and Brogan keep discover Embry doing things not quite on the up and up. Those secrets I never would have guessed and caught me by surprise. Personality wise, I found Brogan to be almost a bit too sweet for being in security. However, he’s not a dummy and begins to figure out Embry is up to something, although it doesn’t stop him from pursuing Embry. Embry first comes off as quite the abrasive jerk. However, as we get to know him better and the reasons why become clear, it all begins to make sense.

Bad Judgment is loaded with mystery and intrigue. There are many secrets to discover on all sides. Brogan and Embry are very entertaining with their dialog being snappy and quick. The story flows at a good steady pace with everything building up to the shocking end. There’s a lot that goes on within the company and its executives, none of which are likable. On the flip side, Brogan’s associates are all pleasant, particularly Mario. The book is split up into different portions with part one told from Brogan’s point of view. Here we see Brogan developing feelings and beginning to unlock the mystery of Embry. Part two belongs to Embry. Now that we now some of his secrets are out we get to watch him struggle as he has to decide between wanting revenge and wanting Brogan.

I’m really happy with the overall outcome of the story. I found author Sydney Bell did a very admiral job of keeping everything together and engaging for the reader. It’s hard to believe this is her first book. She is definitely an author to watch and I look forward to reading her next book.
