Review: Behind Closed Doors (Behind Closed Doors #1) by Lisa Renee Jones

From New York Times bestselling author Lisa Renee Jones comes a brand new gripping and provocative novel that ties into her bestselling Careless Whispers and Inside Out series. You can enjoy this as a standalone, but fans of Careless Whispers and Inside Out will get an exciting glimpse of who Ella really is and some of the secrets she's been hiding from everyone she knows.

Desperate to pay for law school, Skye tries her hand at auction hunting with her friend Ella, only to find a poker chip and a note leading to an offsite locker. The next thing she knows, Jason “Red Bull” Wise—a famous, millionaire poker player—is at her door, accusing her of blackmail. Innocent, she swears he’s wrong. He rolls the dice and believes her, impulsively inviting her along to Las Vegas. And remarkably, cautious Skye takes a risk, finding herself seduced by this dangerously alluring man, on his private jet, and finally living life to the fullest. But there is more than passion waiting for Skye and Jason in Vegas when blackmail takes a deadly turn.

300 Review

I’ve been devouring the Careless Whispers series when this little #2.5 nugget came up as an offering for review. Since I am quite the Kayden and Ella addict, I obviously was not going to say no so I happily jumped into to reading Behind Closed Doors and was immediately…confused. Where are Kayden and Ella? What, no Italy? I’m feeling a bit short changed here and then I find myself sucked into Skye and Jason’s world, which turned out to be a nice side trip. Yes, I read the blurb so of course I knew this wasn’t actually part of Kayden and Ella’s drama but…hold that thought.

When I first started reading and realized there was going to be the whole poker thing going on I wasn’t too thrilled. Not a big Vegas or gambling romance fan here. However, I really did like Skye and the situation she found herself in, courtesy of Ella. Buying a storage unit filled with stuff hoping to find something of value, what could go wrong there? Oh plenty if you really don’t have a lot of money, but that’s not half the problem. She finds a locker key to an off-site location. Nothing shady there right? In it, she finds a note and a poker chip, a very expensive poker chip. From there things just go nuts when sexy Trouble shows up at her door…accusing her of blackmail. WHAT?! Knowing she’s innocent, she tells him she’s wrong. He wants in the storage, she swears she’s innocent, he’s desperate, she’s feisty yet sweet, he begins to believe her, and things just get more interesting from there.

Behind Closed door reads fast, is oh so fun and highly entertaining. You can’t help but adore Skye and Jason. At first, I thought he was a jerk and possibly a scary dude. That changed quickly when he begins to believe Skye and shows his true side. Skye is perfect from the get go. There’s quite a bit of flirty banter between them, well mostly from Jason, that I just loved. Add that into a poker tournament, blackmail, and passion and you have a well-rounded romance that will be impossible to put down.

Now depending on how you see it, Behind Closed Doors is either a new book to Lisa Renee Jones’ new series, Behind Closed Doors, a bonus book to Inside Out, OR, book 2.5 to Careless Whisper. WHEW! Quite a few series there. I happen to be reading it for option #3 and honestly, I didn’t know how it was going to fit in. I mean you get a smidge of Ella in the beginning and then that seemed to be it. Until…. AH! I get it now. Looks like the timeline placement is before Ella loses her memory and is still in the U.S. I loved the little nugget of knowledge I have now because not only does it give to answers but it also brings up more questions about Ella’s past. Now what those nuggets are you will have to find out for yourself so grab yourself a copy and start reading!
