Review: Blackest Nights by Cindy Jacks

BDSM-curious Georgia, aka Red, attends a lunch meeting of the Rocky Road Social Club where she meets a Dom who introduces himself as Black. Tall, caramel-skinned and truly gorgeous, Black has a commanding presence that draws Red in.

After one dinner together, Red agrees to explore a weekend as Black’s sub. He pushes her to the limits of pain, pleasure and beyond. Though she delights in his firm hand and even firmer lash, when Black proposes a more permanent arrangement, Red wonders whether she’s ready to submit―body and soul―to the man who dominates her blackest desires.

This was an interesting short read that follows Georgia (or Red as she is called) and her initiation into the BDSM world.  While I can get the curiosity with the lifestyle, there were parts that felt both too rushed and far too extreme for a novice in the lifestyle.   Firstly was her introduction to the lifestyle party: all of her experience was based on some chat forums and a personal ad. When she meets the group at the restaurant for their small gathering, she is completely unaware of her own leanings, and is completely surprised by the questions about her preferences.  I just couldn’t believe that anyone who had made the effort to attend and event was so shocked and clueless about her own proclivities.  Aside from those issues with the main female character, the story was engaging and did pull me in to see just where she would take her constant flurry of “I don’t know” and “I’m not sure”.

She soon learns to be open and honest with her desires, even as she is being guided to those revelations by the firm hand of Black.  His approach is a mix of dominance and gentle caress, although she does make several huge gaffes: who openly gives into their curiosity and searches another person’s briefcase (or in this case portfolio) without first asking? I truly expected her to be put out at that point, although Black used the misstep to truly punish her with a combination of clamps, plugs and deprivation.  There were some moments that made me highly uncomfortable: anal sex without lubrication, and a scene with Kinbaku, that in the aftermath showed Black not quite as in control of himself as he would prefer others to believe.   This whole book was a mixed bag for me: intriguing and entertaining with plenty of experiences, but not light and fluffy story of this genre.  Does that make it more real?  I’m not entirely sure: but those who appreciate the fast pace, unique approaches and some scenes that are unique to the stories I have read – this book has those elements.   There also is a promise for an ongoing relationship between the two for those who like the HEA and HFN endings.

I received an eBook copy from the publisher for purpose of honest review for the Jeep Diva. I was not compensated for this review: all conclusions are my own responsibility.
