Review: Blood & Thunder (THIRDS #2) by Charlie Cochet

When a series of bombs go off in a Therian youth center, injuring members of THIRDS Team Destructive Delta, and causing a rift between agents Dexter J. Daley and Sloane Brodie, peace seems unattainable. Especially when a new and frightening group, the Order of Adrasteia, appears to always be a step ahead. With panic and intolerance spreading and streets becoming littered with the Order’s propaganda, hostility between Humans and Therians grows daily. Dex and Sloane, along with the rest of the team, are determined to take down the Order and restore peace, not to mention settle a personal score. But the deeper the team investigates the bombings, the more they believe there’s a more sinister motive than a desire to shed blood and spread chaos.

Discovering the frightful truth behind the Order’s intent forces Sloane to confront secrets from a past he thought he’d left behind for good, a past that could not only destroy him and his career, but also the reputation of the organization that made him all he is today. Now more than ever, Dex and Sloane need each other, and, along with trust, the strength of their bond will mean the difference between justice and all-out war.

I have to admit when I read that Sloane had recently lost a lover (this is from the first book Hell & High Water) I didn’t feel good about him and Dex jumping into a relationship. I’m pleased to see that is not what is going on here. Dex and Sloane have been doing something for four months now, but it is definitely not a relationship. It’s hot sex and plenty of it all while working together and keeping things hidden from others. Sloane is trying to work through his feelings of losing Gabe while coming to terms that there is certainly something worth exploring with Dex. Dex is beyond patient with Sloane. In fact there are times that I felt Dex is a little too easy going where their explorations of commitment possibilities could possibly go. This makes for some good reading though. I’m enjoying this slow pacing of the relationship.

To contrast the pacing of Dex and Sloane and them trying for more the action here in Blood and Thunder is non-stop and extremely fast paced. They are trying to discover the whereabouts of Isaac and discover who all the players are where the Order of Adrasteia are hiding. The attacks against Therians are escalating yet the members of THIRDS Destructive Delta feel that there is something off with the attacks. The more they look into it the oddities they discover more possible motives where Isaac and the Order are concerned. Sloane sees one of those possibilities as something from his past that he’d rather keep buried. Sloane past is something that is repeatedly touched upon and never really explored. I was pleased to see some of those revelations.

Thus far I’ve enjoyed Charlie Cochet’s THIRDS books. The character (main and secondary) are thoroughly enjoyable. I’m looking forward to the future books and the couples that are paired up for those. The teasers of those characters getting together (their own books) have already got my attention and eagerness for those future books. I’m also looking forward to the new evil foe that was introduced at the end of Blood & Thunder.
