Review: Bone of My Bones by Debra Doggett

Rose DeSalvo has had better days. Not many but a few. Especially since she left her cheating husband Eddie behind. But Eddie has turned up again to wreck havoc in her life. This time, though, he's buried among her prize roses. Rose knows she's got to find out who killed Eddie and get him back to the scene of the crime before she can be accused of his murder. That's the reason she suddenly finds herself with a dangerously hot necromancer, a zombie ex-husband and a wild assortment of people who seem to know far more about her than she does about them. If she could only get them to tell her what she needs to know before she runs out of time, she just might uncover not only Eddie's murderer but her own destiny.

I’ve just finished reading Bone of My Bones and I am very upset. I’m upset that this isn’t a series. Holy crow! I did not expect to enjoy this book this much! What a fun, entertaining mystery this book turned out to be.

We start with Rose’s brother staggering home drunk and discovering shoes (with a attached body) buried under Rose’s prized rose bush. Turns out it’s her dead ex-husband, Eddie, who took their vows none too seriously. Since Rose had kicked his butt to the curb she was a bit worried (more like panicked!) to call the police to report the dead body. Seems Rose was a bit vocally about what she wished would happen to his cheating butt and was worried she would end up as prime suspect number one. Rose thinks if she can find out what happened to Eddie and get his body back to the scene of the crime, she’ll be off the hook. Simple right?

First look at the cover pretty much had me thinking, nope not interested in the book. But then I read the blurb and thought, oh what the heck. Surprise of surprise…I really enjoyed it. Rose is such a quirky, smarmy character. She’s meandering through life as a so-so witch until her ex-husband turns up in her rose garden. The journey she takes to get rid of him was comical. My first thought would not be to find a a way to speak to the dead to find out what happened to him but then again, I’m not a witch. So with a little encouragement from an older witch, Rose finds herself seeking help from the necromancer, Matthias. My initial impression of him was broody, like Lurch-broody, only much more attractive. And low-and-behold we now have a not-so-dead zombie ex-husband. As his story comes out, Rose finds herself on a journey she didn’t expect. Murder, lies, family secrets, a creepy power-hungry old man are just some of the things Rose is in-store for as she comes to the truth of who and what she really is.

There are quite a few questions in this story that go unanswered but I’m actually okay with it. It was all the humorous situations Rose found herself in that had me enjoying the book so much. If author Debra Dogget was to turn this entertaining book into a series I would be first in line to see where she would take Rose next. Anybody who like humor and mystery mixed in with their PNR, are going to like  Bone of My Bones.
