Review & Interview: Caged Warrior (Dragon Kings #1) by Lindsey Piper

The first installment in this fierce and sensual new paranormal romance series features demonic gladiators, ruthless mafia villains, and a proud race on the brink of extinction.

Ten years ago, Audrey MacLaren chose to marry her human lover, making her an exile from the Dragon Kings, an ancient race of demons once worshiped as earthly gods. Audrey and her husband managed to conceive, and their son is the first natural-born Dragon King in a generation—which makes him irresistible to the sadistic scientist whose mafia-funded technology allows demon procreation. In the year since her husband was murdered, Audrey and her little boy have endured hideous experiments.

Shackled with a collar and bound for life, Leto Garnis is a Cage warrior. Only through combat can Dragon Kings earn the privilege of conceiving children. Leto uses his superhuman speed and reflexes to secure the right for his two sisters to start families. After torture reveals Audrey’s astonishing pyrokenesis, she is sent to fight in the Cages. If she survives a year, she will be reunited with her son. Leto is charged with her training. Initially, he has no sympathy for her plight. But if natural conception is possible, what has he been fighting for? As enemies, sparring partners, lovers, and eventual allies, Leto and Audrey learn that in a violent underground world, love is the only prize worth winning.

Review

It was with great relish I started reading Caged Warrior. I had read its prequel and was hoping it would be as good. But instead, it was better. The characters and plot had so much more to them I lost myself in the telling and couldn’t put this book down. This raw brutal story was like riding a roller coaster in the dark. It had so many twists and turns I didn’t see coming. As each element is added, I kept thinking to myself, this is it the great finale but it wasn’t. There was so much more to come. The anticipation keeps building as each new piece is unveiled until the final explosive climax at the end.

Author Lindsey Piper has an amazing talent for creating some of the best characters I have read. Audrey is a tough chick from the very beginning but as Nynn takes over she becomes even stronger. Leto is a tough, strong and oh yeah…HOT. Yet, despite how strong they both are you can’t help but feel empathy for all the sacrifices and heartbreaks both have had to endure to survive. The added bonus of Silent and Hark (See Caged Warrior) making a return appearance just rounded out all the characters to perfection.

There is a prequel, Silent Warrior, which is not necessary to read to follow Caged Warrior but it sure does make it more interesting. The Dragon King series is easily the best paranormal series I have read this year. Oh man, I can not WAIT for the next book. Caged Warrior is an absolute must read. Get it now!

I received this book from JeepDiva in exchange for my honest review. The opinions and rating of this review are solely mine and in no way was I compensated.

Caged Warrior: Dragon Kings Book One

Vanessa: Would you please start by telling us a little bit about yourself?

I’m a little bit of a mystery at the moment, because I wanted to start this paranormal series—a new genre for me—without preconceived notions. Sometimes it can be difficult for an author who’s written historical or contemporary, for example, to make the switch to something grittier and edgier, while keeping the same audience. Now, I can jump onto the scene as Lindsey Piper!

(However, some people have already figured it out. And RT online will run a “reveal” feature in a matter of days!)

Vanessa: What is one thing about you that your readers would find surprising or never guess about you?

That I used to want to be a rodeo barrel racer and a comic book artist. Dual careers, maybe?

Gaele: Where do your ideas come from? Do you set out to ‘outline’ a plot and situations, or do you let the characters take you along for the ride, and clean it up later?

Ideas come from everywhere. Sometimes I get frustrated with the direction a particular TV show or movie took, or a dissatisfying finale. That sparks the question: OK, so how would I “fix” it? As for my process, I learn my characters first. If I don’t know them, I can’t know if they’re acting within the parameters of their personalities within any given situation. I let them guide me for a good portion of the drafting process, then tighten up the details as I strive for the finale.

Gaele: With all the characters you have created – are there any that you feel need to have another book or series to get their “story told”?

I hope not! I hope that if I’ve done my job, readers will finish the last page with a sense that the journey of these two lovers is complete. They might make appearances in future books, as many characters in the “Dragon Kings” series do, but the heart of their love story is a happy ending. No further need to revisit. That said, there are series I haven’t finished yet (under other names) that are just begging me for the time to return to their adventures.

Gaele: Best advice you have ever been given about writing?

The first draft is you telling yourself a story. That’s hard advice to follow when I consider all the work that awaits after a first draft, but it’s the best way to approach writing. It’s just a story…

Gaele: What do you do to relax, when you aren’t writing or thinking about it?

I am a complete television and movie junkie. Anything from Hannibal to Say Yes to the Dress, while some of my favorite movies of late have been The Avengers, Before Midnight, and The Bourne Legacy. I’ve cut back on reading quite a bit since becoming a professional, because it’s difficult to shut off my “writing brain.” With TV and movies, I can still be entertained by storytelling, without see the wizard behind the curtain, so to speak.

Rachel: If you could visit any time period and location (past or future) when and where would you go?

I’d probably regret it because it would never be as romantic as I’ve spent years creating in my mind, but I’d visit the Old West. As a teenager I was obsessed with the Pony Express, the outlaws and heroes of the era, and Dances with Wolves was my favorite movie.

Vanessa: Where is the strangest place you have found inspiration?

I needed a name for a character in CAGED WARRIOR and used the first few letters of a prescription bottle on my desk. I’m not telling who or what!

Vanessa: If you could spend a day with any one of your heroes where would y’all go and what would y’all do? Juicy details please!

ANY hero? Well, I’ll stay with the Land of Lindsey and stay with the “Dragon Kings” series. In that case Tallis of Pendray, the hero of next month’s BLOOD WARRIOR, would spend a very, very long time in his castle in the Scottish Highlands. If any of you loved the show Smash, you’ll know which sexy character Tallis was perhaps based on. Tall, pale and British. Wait. That sounds like my husband. Is that allowed?

Vanessa: I’m a bit of an author stalker and I love going to signings and conventions. Do you have any upcoming appearances?

I will 100% YAY be at the RWA National conference in Atlanta, signing CAGED WARRIOR and making appearances as two of my other pseudonyms. Come see me at the literacy signing as Lindsey Piper and all will be revealed!

As a young man, sarcastic, violent Tallis Pendray believed the Dragon Kings’ survival depended on a prophecy delivered in dreams by a woman named “the Sun.” His role has been to complete inexplicable, even reprehensible tasks. First, by murdering a priest, he united his fragmented clan in their hatred of him. Dubbed “the Heretic,” Tallis fled his family’s Highland estate. Now disillusioned, he seeks revenge on the woman he holds responsible for two decades of exile.

Telepath Kavya Indranan is a charismatic, seductive cult leader born to a prominent family. However, she grew up terrorized by the ominous threat of her powerful, insane twin brother. On the run and hiding among the poor, she witnessed the destruction wrought by her clan’s centuries-old civil war. Maturity nurtures Kavya’s determination to end the cycle of bloodshed. Those who follow her call for peace have nicknamed her “the Sun.”

Bent on revenge, and without knowledge of Kavya’s noble intentions, Tallis kidnaps her on the eve of her groundbreaking announcement. The two watch in horror as her twin brutally smashes the tentative truce…and hunts the sister whose death would make him invincible.

Kavya is the Sun–revered, untouched, and bound by a lonely destiny that promises a deadly showdown against the last of her family. Tallis is the Heretic–despised and exiled because of actions that seem random, heartless, and contrary to the safety of the clans he protects. She’s not a goddess, and he’s not a natural born killer. A desperate trek from the Himalayan foothills to the Scottish Highlands reveals two secluded souls hidden by bloody reputations. Will their trust be strong enough to avert an all-out war that could destroy them, and their kind, forever?
