Review – Change of Heart (Unbreak My Heart #2) by Nicole Jacquelyn

Anita Martin doesn't expect much from life. Growing up on the street, bouncing from one foster home to another, she learned to rely only on herself. Even after she finally found a loving family to take her in, she was still an outsider-something Abraham, one of the family's older sons, never let her forget.

Abraham Evans doesn't know how Ani always manages to get under his skin, only that's she's been doing it since they were teens. She is-and always has been-undeniably gorgeous. But he's never met anyone as pissed off at the world as Ani.

For fifteen years, Ani and Bram have agreed on exactly one thing: they can't stand each other-until one night when their anger gives way to passion. Yet even as Ani and Bram begin to secretly seek comfort in one another's arms, they remain emotionally worlds apart. When Ani's life takes a dramatic turn and she realizes she needs more than Bram can give, their fragile, no-strings relationship unravels. One way or another, Ani is determined to survive. But when Bram finally admits his true feelings, he may discover Ani has moved on without him . .

300 Review

I loved this book.  Jacquelyn writes dialog incredibly well and the book is mostly dialog.  The story is imaginative and emotional, full of so much real life emotion.  I laughed.  I cried.  I couldn’t put it down.

From the opening scene between much younger Bram and Anita, the chemistry is hot but in a completely denied way.  I’m certain Bram feels it immediately but Anita is young and doesn’t seem to.  Fast forward quite a few years and the two are still not together but they work at the same company and participate in family dinners with the parents who adopted him and fostered her.  They snipe at each other constantly and are not close.  Anita has a scathing mouth and is quick to throw barbs at Bram.  It’s hard to imagine them even being civil to each other.

When Anita follows Bram to a bar after dinner one night, the two end up having a super-hot quickie in the back of her SUV.  The post-coital scene is anything but a lead-in to the two becoming a couple.  Nothing in life is that easy for the pair.  Bram is so surprisingly sweet to Ani after finding her at home in pain and depressed.  How refreshing to see this big, gruff man take care of her.  They begin to share more time exploring their crazy, hot attraction and trying to build a relationship.  When all seems to be going well finally, life throws them another curve ball that may not be possible to overcome.

There is so much more to the book than these two and their love story.  They are part of a large, complex family and must deal with all the good and bad that that brings.

Jacquelyn does a very good job with the military aspects of the plot.  She either knows from personal experience or has researched it thoroughly.

I have a new must read author.
