Review: Cowboy on the Run by Devon McKay

Running from a final fight with his drunk and abusive father, Nate had never planned to return to the town where the only good thing had been a brunette beauty with more compassion than he deserved. But finding himself on a ranch for boys facing the same issues not only taught him how to be a man, it taught him that there was more to life than running.

Nate Walker always did know how to make an entrance, once again turning Jessie Calhoun's routine life upside down. Unfortunately, he'd also had the same impact when he left her mending a broken heart in a cloud of dust and taillights.

But this time would be different.

No longer that gullible, naive girl he left behind, she'd be a fool to fall under his spell again. Especially now that she had more at stake--two very important reasons.

Nate Walker returns home to find that Jessie Calhoun is not the gullible girl he left behind and she has two very important secrets, so he has his work cut out for him if he hopes he can earn her trust and love again in this mesmerizing contemporary western romance.

This steady paced and smooth flowing plot captivates readers with suspense and passion. The author brings her story to life with well written words and details and the emotionally gripping story draws the reader deeper into the story while the strong compelling characters grab the reader’s attention and the well orchestrated suspense adds excitement and ensures that the reader wants to know every last detail.

Jessie’s never gotten over Nate but she refuses to just accept what he says at face value – he’s already destroyed her emotionally once and besides she has two very important reasons to keep him at arm’s length. There are a lot of emotional elements to the story that captures the heart and adds lots of depth to the story and the reader can’t help but get caught up in their romance as they try to work through their emotional scars and take a chance at reviving their forever love, especially with their desires still flaring out of control every time they come into contact.

Spine tingling tension builds as small things around the ranch escalates to some dangerous incidents and no one has a clue to who is behind it.  The dangerous elements spice the story up and ensure that there is never a dull moment, but I am not sure that I was all that crazy about the conclusion of the story…big climatic battle (I think maybe it should have a more complete ending like what happened with the bad guy and a bit more time with the couple working out the couple’s future) and then a glossed over happily ever after, but I will be keeping a eye out for more books by this author.
