Review: Under a Crescent Moon by Mercy Celeste

Murder, mystery, sex and magic. It’s just another typical night under a crescent moon…

New Orleans Police Detective Taylor Campbell has done his best to leave Xander Cooper alone. Years ago, he joined the Army to get away from the temptation of the younger man. But a series of murders around Xander’s restaurant has Taylor running scared. And when he happens upon Xander holding off a group of thugs, his honour is forgotten.

Xander Cooper fell in love with Taylor when he was a teen. Now an adult, he’s waited and watched and hoped that Taylor would one day see him as more than a little kid meant to be avoided. He didn’t expect murder to bring Taylor to his bed. For Xander, giving Taylor his heart is easy. Letting him in on the family secret is another thing all together.

He didn’t expect that Taylor would have secrets of his own. Secrets that make a little thing like Xander being a witch seem tame…

Under a Crescent Moon by Mercy Celeste was an interesting mix of paranormal, meets humans, meets crime drama. Taylor and Xander were raised under the same household after Xander’s parents tragically are killed on 9/11. Taken in by his aunt in New Orleans, Xander soon found himself looked after by the housekeeper’s son, Taylor, five years his senior. Knowing that his feelings for Xander were growing, Taylor does the only magnanimous thing possible; leave New Orleans and join the military. Years have gone by, Xander is twenty five, runs a restaurant and Taylor is back in town, one of New Orleans finest, a police detective.

Under a Crescent Moon had so many facets to it that at times it was difficult to follow the story line, but none the less, I truly enjoyed the story. Ms. Celeste delivered many qualities to both the tale and characters that kept me engrossed and cheering for a happy ending. Twists and turns were added that allowed the reader to be absorbed into the details of the plot.

The slight paranormal aspect was an interesting addition; showing Xander and his eccentric family in a different way.  Under a Crescent Moon delivered angst as the star-crossed lovers attempted to wade through their feelings for each other. My only drawback was Taylor’s attitude. I found him slightly sanctimonious and a manipulator of Xander’s feelings. But, in saying that, I did want the HEA, and knowing that Xander’s happily ever after was in the arms of Taylor made it worthwhile. Ms. Celeste did allow Taylor to grow and mature, which also helped.
