Review: Crossed Hearts (Hearts and Scars #1) by K. Vale, Kimber Vale

One heart's been broken. The other is secondhand.

Kory Vansant doesn’t deserve to be alive.

As time sucks him dry of energy, sapping the final ounces of strength from his congenitally enlarged heart, he’s forced to end his career as Kory Kent, porn star. Staring down death, he questions his life choices and prays for a miracle. For another chance at life, he vows to change who he is at his core.

His prayers are answered. A perfect heart now beats in his chest, but it comes at a heavy price. The donor is an innocent young man cut down far too prematurely.

Kory’s blemished history and his donor’s spotless past are far from ideal matches.
As his debts skyrocket, Kory can’t help but think his resolve to walk the high road is being tested. After he meets the adorable Will Squire at the gravesite they both visit, he’s doubly damned because there’s no way he can keep up his end of the bargain. What happens when a man breaks a deal with a higher power?

Will often prefers the company of the dead to that of the living. Following a bad breakup, he pours himself into his two jobs—funeral director at his uncle’s mortuary and part-time paramedic. He’s drawn ever closer to Kory, as if fate sticks her fickle hand in and pushes them together like two unlikely puzzle pieces. But sometimes history can’t be buried, and maybe divine intervention isn’t always right. Will discovers everyone is imperfect, no matter how pretty the outer package, and opening one’s heart is never easy, but can be oh, so worth the pain.

I was a little worried about the heart that has a major role in this book and how it crossed Will and Kory. The blurb states how Kory gets this very important organ and what it means to him. Where does this heart tie Will into this tale was my concern. I was hoping Will was not chasing the last living piece of a loved one. I am pleased to say he was not. I also liked how everything worked out for Will and Kory getting together through a character who has a major role, but not a role at all in this extremely sweet and mildly sexy little romance.

Setting out to be a porn star was never Kory’s goal in life. He enjoyed his success and lived what he thought to be a fairly good life. An enlarged heart puts him into early retirement and the poor house. His medical bills are more than he can handle and his heart is shortening his all too young life. He does the only thing left to do, prays for a miracle. That miracle is granted in a price that Kory doesn’t feel he is worth. Thankful for all that has been given to him he vows to pay it back and live a good life. That good life includes an honest career and no more questionable life choices.

Proposing to the man you love and want to spend the rest of your life with is not supposed to end with insults and slammed doors. That’s how Will finds out that the man he thought he’d spend the rest of his life with is not that special someone after all. He has his jobs and his home, he will survive. He thinks about those who didn’t survive and pays his respects to them often. It’s on one such visit to the cemetery that he meets Kory and discovers that he has one very special heart.

There’s an ex-boyfriend, former porn star, and characters that don’t feel their worth. I knew exactly where this was going to go. It was kept short and to the point with very little dramatics. It worked and didn’t annoy or seem predictable. I loved the non-character and his role here. Vale has given readers an against the odds romance with a new and different twist on second chances. I liked this. Will and Kory are so deserving of so much more than they have ever had before that them getting the best things life has to offer with each other makes for an all-around great romance and entertaining read. I’m hoping that I’ve guessed correctly where this Hearts and Scars series is going with the next book/character.

Paranormal Romance

Favorite quote, Kory to Will: “There are some things I can change about myself. But wanting you is not one of them.”
