Title: The Crystal Slipper
A paranormal category romance from Entangled's Covet imprint...
Sometimes you just have to believe...
A single crystal slipper. It was probably the weirdest gift librarian Celinda Branham ever received during a Christmas gift exchange. Who would even wear these in the real world? Not Celinda, wearer of sensible shoes and fairy tale naysayer. That said, she certainly has the requisite wicked stepmother, irritating stepsister, and empty bank account. Of course, if she actually believed in all that fantastical junk, she could wait for her Prince Charming... Only Prince Charming doesn't exist. But Preston Chandler believes in fairy tales. Oh, does he ever. All he did was spurn the advances of a certain witch, and now his sister is under a sleeping spell. And the only way to break it? Find the other glass slipper and give someone "Love's First Kiss." But when Preston finally tracks down Celinda, he's dismayed to discover that the shy librarian who owns the other shoe has no interest in anything remotely resembling magic—including love. Now he must find a way into his Cinderella's cynical heart, or lose his sister... and his only chance for true love.

Cinderella is my favorite fairy tale. I don’t admit to many favorites, mostly because I don’t like favorites. However, Cinderella is a favorite. I adore the original story, the Disney version, the Rogers and Hammerstein version, and the various retellings in both video and in print. I love them and will devour one whenever I find one. The Crystal Slipper falls into this category.
Not only is there a very nice retelling of Cinderella in the Crystal Slipper, but there is also a little Sleeping Beauty and a pinch of Snow White. A most interesting “smash up.”
Then the author throws in a frumpy, repressed librarian, Celinda Branham, well . . . I am in heaven. I have a weakness for those librarian stories too. Even the frumpiest and most repressed librarian usually ends up being very passionate. Celinda did not disappoint. She had very good reasons for being frumpy and repressed. Being a rewrite of Cinderella, bet you can guess some of them. I was so thrilled to see Celinda grow and loose that frumpiness and repression and become the beautiful, passionate person she was meant to be. It was kind of like watching a butterfly emerge from her cocoon. *sigh*
As for her “Prince Charming,” Preston Chandler – what a clod! No wonder he managed to get a witch angry at him. He needed to be hit alongside the head with that “Crystal slipper.” Thank goodness he finally saw the light. Whew!
This was a fun story with an interesting cast of characters. And I do mean characters! From Celinda’s best friend, Tamelea, to her nosy neighbor, Mrs. Mendleson, they were fun and interesting. They were all here. The “evil” stepmother, the step sister, the fairy godmother, and even some unexpected characters, like the witch – Raven.
This is a fun, sweet retelling of my favorite fairy tale and was a wonderful way to spend a lazy Sunday afternoon.
