Title: Dark Instincts
It happens whenever wolf shifter Roni Axton is near Marcus Fuller: a crackle of sexual awareness that’s intoxicating…and deeply annoying. Marcus is a pack enforcer who oozes power, but Roni is lethal in her own right—nothing like the flirty females who flock around him. Even still, his possessive gaze makes one thing clear. Marcus has singled her out for seduction, and he wants to make her sit up and beg.
No matter how aloof and unfazed Roni acts, Marcus can tell she wants him. When a brutal attack by a jackal pack forces them to work together, it’s the perfect opportunity for Marcus to chip away at her defenses—until he falls into his own trap, completely unprepared for the intensity of their connection. Roni is the only one who’s ever seen past his shifter charm and discovered the man hiding beneath it. And for Marcus, claiming Roni once will mean needing her forever.

Dark Instincts is my first introduction to The Phoenix Pack series. I missed out on the first three books so I walked into this series blind not knowing the plot or characters. The very beginning I was good with and definitely sparked my interest. As more and more characters came into play I began to get confused and lost. Obviously, reading the first four books would have helped understand who was who as well as the different packs. For that handicap alone I would suggest reading the previous books. Once I got pass the first several chapters I got into the swing of things.
I love Roni! First off, she is a very strong character. I like my lead women to be strong and she totally fit the bill. She also has the quirky coping devices, lollipops and sharing the weirdest trivia facts that I found simply delightful. Marcus is hubba-hubba hot! Everybody thinks he’s an all charming man-whore. There’s so much more to him than that. The two of them together was pure entertainment for me. But deep down inside they have their reasons for their actions and it was so much fun watching them break each other’s’ walls down. Besides Roni and Marcus, there’s a whole cast of characters that I thoroughly enjoyed. I think I need to go back and read their books
Now besides Roni and Marcus’ hooking up, there’s a whole other story going on. It’s filled with wolf and jackal shifters, which I have read plenty of ones with wolves but this is my first with jackals. I found the jackals to be of the stereo typical type you would find in the Lion King but hey, it still worked for me. Lots of action and mystery surrounding the between the different shifters that kept this story rolling along very well. Between the quick, snappy dialog and the who-done-its, I found myself devouring this book as fast as I could. I may have predicted that Roni and Marcus would have ended up together but the journey they were on and the mysteries that needed to be solved, I was pleasantly surprised. Of course everything ends in a fun HEA without and cliffhangers.
Author Suzanne Wright may have a new fan in me. I really enjoyed her story telling. She has quite the way of keeping a story going as well and putting together some very interesting characters. This certainly will not be my last book of hers. I’ll be recommending, this book, this series and this author to anyone looking for their next great PNR to lose themselves in.
