But as a demon hunter, Duncan is the sworn enemy of a demonoid sorceress like Cassandra. Give him another chance to break her heart? Witch, please. But when Cassandra is attacked by a werewolf, Duncan not only comes to her rescue, he helps her take on a band of magic-drunk moonshiners, fire-breathing demons, shifty shapeshifters, and a pet Sasquatch named Sugar. Welcome to Alabama. But when a portal opens up for even more hellaciousness, Cassandra has to admit that Duncan is slowly opening her heart—to a whole new world of unearthly delights...

After having her heart broken by her demon hunter centuries ago, the last thing Cassie is going to do is give Duncan another chance. Her plan is to get on with her life and ignore him. Kind of hard to do when he moves in across the river from her. Duncan is the first to admit he screwed up. She has demon in her and that goes against everything he stands for. Okay, so he panicked and left her but he never stopped loving her and he wants her back. Cassie’s not about ready to let her heart get broken again even if her magic is acting wonky and she gets attacked by a werewolf. Duncan thinks otherwise. Let’s the fun antics begin!
I having one of those moments where I can’t decide if I liked the book or not. Well, not exactly the story, more like the main characters. Take Cassie for example. Yes, Duncan screwed up years ago. Many, MANY years ago. And she’s still holding a grudge many years later. There comes a time where you just got to grow up and let it go. As for Duncan, what is hard to not like about him. Sexy, strong, he wants to make amends, fix what he screwed up. It’s that he’s still harboring a torch for her after so long that had me liking and hating him. Such devotion and yet I want to shake him and say, come on dude, her loss, move on.
There wasn’t a whole lot of hunting going on but still, the story itself was great. The secondary characters, the whole crazy kaboodles, were a blast (Love you Sugar!) and totally redeemed everything that I found irksome. How can you not laugh over a statute with a peanut and what is the big deal about the orb? I’m new to the series but these characters have piqued my interest enough to start the series from the beginning. There was quite a bit of action mixed in with all the funny. Really, if you ignore what was a downer for me, the book was worth the read and had no problem holding my attention.
