Title: Elements of Retrofit
Even the strongest of buildings start out as plans on paper, and every architect knows that sometimes plans need to change. Sometimes, these lessons are learned on the job.
A successful New York architect, Thomas Elkin almost has it all. Coming out as gay and ending his marriage before his fortieth birthday, he needed to start living his life. Now, four years later, with his relationship with his son back on track, and after a few short-lived romances, this esteemed traditional draftsman thought he knew everything about architecture, about life.
Cooper Jones, twenty-two years old, is about to take the architect world by storm. Talented, professional, driven, and completely infuriating, Cooper is the definition of Generation Y.
Starting an internship working with Thomas, Cooper is about to knock Tom’s world off its axis. Tom can teach Cooper about the industry, but Cooper is about to teach Tom a few things about life.

I can count on one hand how many May/December romances I have voluntarily read. To me, age is just a number and a story that is going to have a huge age gap I will usually pass on. Only because there’s always some kind of huge dramatic production about it and that ends up being the focal point. But this first person POV story of Tom and Cooper’s had something about it that was so right I can come up two words that can describe it perfectly for me. Smooth and exciting.
Thomas Elkin – 44, successful architect, workaholic. For most of his life he was living a lie married to a woman. But he ended his marriage and came out as gay, and is ready to live his life. Cooper Jones – 22, intern architect, Gen Y. Friend to Tom’s son and internship working with Tom. Cooper is there ready be a intern and to learn the industry from Tom, but maybe he’ll not be the only one learning.
Smooth and exciting. That’s what Elements of Retrofit felt like to me. Tom is a sexy mature man. He’s ready to start living his life, thought he was living his life now that he was being true to himself and living as a gay man. That is until Cooper comes into his life. All sass and having no problem speaking his mind, Cooper was a force to be reckoned with. Their relationship was such a thrill to watch unfold. The emotional building had a nice progression to it without feel fake or rushed. Yes, the sex between them was HAWT but it was the natural building of friendship to lover to a couple that is what I enjoyed. Tom is all mature and smooth but it was Cooper and his go for it attitude that had me smiling often. Bonus points for the final chapter being told from Cooper’s POV.
Elements of Retrofit was my very first book by author N.R. Walker and I know it won’t be the last. Her ability to create a story and draw me into their world is what is going to keep me coming back. And while this book felt very complete, I know it’s a series and I can’t wait to see where these two men go from here. I have a new M/M author to follow! I’ll be recommending her and her books to all my book buddies.
