Review: Emerald Fire (Jewel Intrigue #2) by Monica McCabe

Chloe Larson is a historian obsessed with clearing the name of her grandfather, eight generations back. After his heroic exploits during the Prussian Wars his life slid into oblivion and madness, taking with him the location of a queen’s spectacular emerald jewels. The discovery of his cryptic two-hundred year old journal offers a clue, except it's been stolen and her only hope of recovery is proving uncooperative.

Finnegan Kane is a top-notch marine bounty hunter on the hunt for the Emerald Fire, a 120-foot Sunseeker yacht seized by ruthless Caribbean pirates. It’s the kind of dirty work that keeps his antique ship restoration business afloat, but that doesn’t mean he has to put up with the fiery demands of an admittedly gorgeous historian. When Chloe offers the one thing that practically guarantees success—the GPS coordinates of the Fire’s location—he has no choice but to team up and forge into uncharted waters.

With danger at every turn, Chloe and Finnegan must battle against the odds to decipher a historical legacy and settle a score against a family gone mad.

300 Review

I am passionate about history, I love everything about it and I must admit that I also like adventure video games.  When I read the blurb of Emerald Fire I was instantly compelled to read it.  When an author is deciding to go the adventure road I expect it to be a page-turner and also a fast pace story.  Monica McCabe delivered just that!  This is a really good book that I truly enjoyed!

For those of you that are looking for some hot and steamy intimate moments in a story; you won’t find it here, it is very basic and I am good with that.  What you will find, though,  is a great adventure that is taking us in the Carribean and then back in the US.  You will also find pirates, an unlikely collaboration between a historian and freelancer and a lot of twists that will keep you on the edge of your seat.

I’ll talk a little about the story but I don’t want to spoil your fun of reading it.  Chloe Larson’s uncle has disappeared along with his Yacht (Emerald Fire).  Chloe loves her uncle to death and she also hid a 200 years old journal on the yacht, that makes it two good reasons to travel to Carribean to retrieve both of them.  Finnegan is working as a freelancer for a Boston insurance company and since the second wife of Jonathan (Chloe’s uncle) made an insurance claim for the Emerald Fire, he is going on site to investigate.  He is a loner and doesn’t want to be bother by anyone. Chloe had another point of view on this matter,  in exchange of his collaboration, she is offering him the GPS coordinates of the Emerald Fire, an offer that he can’t refuse.  The adventure is quickly changing to a quest to find the 200 years old jewels of the Prussian Empress. Just thinking about this story makes me want to read again!

What I really like about Emerald Fire is that the romance part is not overshadowing the adventure part of the story.  It is well crafted and both are blending together perfectly.  The Twists are awesome and the writing is great as well.  I was entertained and I really don’t have anything negative to say about this book.

Chloe’s character of a historian is vibrant and is passionate about uncovering the mysteries surround the 200 years old journal that she is studying for quite a while now.  Finnegan is a man that is having a rock solid armor around his heart, but Chloe found a way to crack it.  Together they made an awesome team for our utmost entertainment!

This is the second book in the Jewel Intrigue series and can be read as a standalone.  I can’t wait to read the first one!! I definitely recommend it!
