I like it when a story pulls me in and engages my interest, not letting me go until the end.  This was one of those for me.  It is staying in my head with visions of dragons and riders souring in the sky protecting their little part of the world.  I must admit Ann McCaffrey’s Dragonriders of Pern also floated around a bit.  I adore dragon riders no matter where they come from – Pern or Gemarra.

Tarkan “Tark” Benestaire and Arian “Ari” Plenastenery are hot dragon rider enforcers for the Sapphire Den.  Their dragons Benmonth and Annlyss are a mated pair that has chosen Tark and Ari as their riders.  Although I had thoughts of Pern, this world was very different, though still as fascinating and interesting.  The dragons are highly intelligent and believe that they “own” the humans.  An interesting dynamic and something to pay attention to.

Chelsea McMullin has been kidnapped, with her friend Tansy, from Melbourne Australia and taken to this alien world.  Tarkan and Ari rescue her from the slave auctions, but Tansy has been put on a different shuttle and is who knows where.  The one thing Chelsea wants as much as going home, is to find Tansy.  Tarkan offers to help her find Tansy, but there is a price.

On a world where women are at a premium, the dragon riders had little hope of ever having a woman of their own.  Tarkan and Ari persuade Chelsea that it would be in all their best interest if she would contract to them as their mate, knowing this would not be a popular decision with the ruling body.  Surprisingly, the greatest allies they had in this were the dragons.  I loved that twist in the book.

The getting to know you and falling in love was really a little fast to be totally believable, but this is a fantasy story, so who cares.  This worked for me and was really so hot!  These three, once they got down do it, sizzled!  Their mating also brought some new dynamics to the relationship between Tark and Ari.  HOT!

I was a little disappointed in the ending of this.  Oh Tarkan, Ari and Chelsea get a happy ending, but we are also left with indications that there will be future conflict.  *sigh*  The way this was left walks the thin line between serial and series.  This leans to the series side of the line, but we are not done with these three characters.  Alas, I did know this was a “book 1”.  But, this was a good enough story that I will be looking for the next book in this series.  I really hope it will be soon.
