Review – Force of Temptation (The Mercury Pack #2) by Suzanne Wright

Harley Vincent is resigned to life in the human world. Sure, being a margay shifter is half her nature, but life among humans gives her the freedom to roam and do as she pleases. That is, until anti-shifter extremists target her, putting her life in immediate danger.

When an old acquaintance and onetime fling, Jesse Dalton, shows up to offer the protection of his pack, Harley hesitates. She may have feelings for Jesse that go beyond their one-night stand, but life among shifters means giving over her independence to the needs of pack. Plus Mercury Pack has its own threat to face: a rich half-shifter is determined to claim their territory at any cost.

Jesse, who lost his true mate as a child, has wanted Harley since their night together, and he’s not letting her go again. They may not be destined for each other, but he knows she belongs to him and with his pack. Even if he can convince her to join him now, can he convince her to stay?

I just can’t get enough of this Pack. (SIDE NOTE) When I read the first of this series, I hadn’t read ANY of the Phoenix Pack books. So I was flying blind when this author would reference a few of that pack’s members. Honestly? I STILL haven’t picked up those books because I’ve been so darn busy. But when the author brings the Phoenix Pack back in to this story line, it was seamless, effortless and I LOVED IT!!!!

Jesse Dalton is an enforcer for the Mercury Pack. He loves his job, loves his territory and couldn’t be happier with his new pack (he left his pack to join this one). Unfortunately, Jesse’s true mate died at a young age, before a mating bond was formed. Usually only getting one chance at a mate, everyone around him pretty much felt his “pain”. But not Jesse. Nope. You see, even though he lost his true mate, he’s known that he belonged with someone else. Someone who helped pull him out of his sulking ways, bringing him back from the brink of hell. She just didn’t know it.

Harley Vincent is a drifter. Well. She’s a half breed who left her pack to live with the humans, trying to find her “place”. While her father serves his jail time for killing humans who brutally killed her brother, she lived with her human aunt, away from the shifter world. While blending in with the humans, extremists start threatening her; trying to get to her father who is believed to be the founder of a group that “punishes” the extremists (I make it sound WAY more difficult than it is). Anyway. Thanks to the cute little Seer of the Mercury Pack, Jesse stops an intended bomb from killing Jesse. Saves the day and then forces Harley hand by protecting her. Oh…did I mention that they have history with each other?

I’m not going to go in to detail, because the way story is laid out is brilliant. Jesse and Harley have known each other since they were kids. They both lost people they loved. But most importantly, they both have very strong feelings for one another. Jesse is determined to prove that even though Harley isn’t his “true mate”, that she’s still HIS. But there are multiple obstacles standing in their way. Lots of family issues, dead memories and stubbornness to name a few.

Don’t let the description of this book fool you. Yes, this is about a wolf pack. But Harley is a Margay cat. And we all know that kitty cats like to play, with everything. But you’ll also read about birds, eagles, snakes and polar bears. Yep. A little bit of everything for everyone. Just like the first book, I was completely pulled in, not only by the romance, but by the suspense of the story line, with some pretty cute and hilarious bantering. I’m looking forward to another installment.
