Review: Hannah and the Highlander (Untamed Highlanders #1) by Sabrina York

First in a brand-new series about the bold, brawny men of the Scottish Highlands—and the lovely lasses who bring them to their knees…

Highlanders are her weakness.

Hannah Dounreay has no time for suitors who only seem interested in her family’s land, which she manages as well as any man. If she marries, she wants to be loved for the educated, independent woman she is. But when a strong, silent—and spectacularly handsome—Highlander saves her from a violent attack, her heart is stirred. Who is this man? And if he asks for Hannah’s hand, will she be able to resist him?

Love is the most powerful weapon of all.

Alexander Lochlannach, Laird of Dunnet, has no time to lose. The Highlands are in an uproar as clans battle for land—without mercy—and Alexander can’t afford to fall for the wildly attractive, strong-willed Hannah. What’s more, he has a desperate secret, one that could destroy them both. But as their attraction turns into an all-consuming passion, Alexander has no choice but to prove to Hannah that he’s the only man for her—body and soul…

I have to be honest  and tell you, I am not a huge fan of the Highlander trope. *gasp* I know.  How can that be?  They are so hot and fierce.  So strong and alpha.  But well, I generally find them rather repetitious.  Manly man captures – either figuratively or literally – the damsel in need of . . . whatever, and after some battles they live happily ever after.  Okay once in a while, but not exactly my cup of tea.

Now that being said, I am also a HUGE fan of Sabrina York so when she gifted me with a copy of this book, I had to read it.  It was, after all a Sabrina York story and she hasn’t let me down yet.  She didn’t this time either.

I got to see all the wonderful trademark things that can be found in a York story.  A feisty sassy heroine who knows her own mind and isn’t afraid to express it.  A HOT alpha male who gets brought to his knees by the sassy heroine.  And bacon!  It was all there as well as a wonderful story that takes place in a beautiful country and a controversial era.

I was rather surprised to find the story taking place in this very controversial era of Scottish history.  Not only do we have a wonderful Sabrina York romance, but she is expanding her talent to a rich historical novel about something that could have been difficult to write about.  She did an excellent job of showing us a country in turmoil.  The positives and the negatives of what was happening in the era.  I can only think that Ms York spent hours and hours researching to bring us such a rich, realistic story.

I loved the characters.  The story was beautifully paced with a nice mix of action and romance.   Although the featured couple in this romance found their happy ever after, I also spotted the upcoming couples and look forward to the continuing saga.  There was no cliff hanger, but one is left very aware there is more to the story.

In spite of the fact I don’t usually like this kind of book, I really cannot wait to read the next one in this enthralling series.
