Review: Hard As You Can by Laura Kaye

Five dishonored soldiers.
Former Special Forces.
One last mission.
These are the men of Hard Ink.

Ever since hard-bodied, drop-dead-charming Shane McCallan strolled into the dance club where Crystal Dean works, he’s shown a knack for getting beneath her defenses. For her little sister’s sake, Crystal can’t get too close. Until her job and Shane’s mission intersect, and he reveals talents that go deeper than she could have guessed.

Shane would never turn his back on a friend in need, especially a former Special Forces teammate running a dangerous, off-the-books operation. Nor can he walk away from Crystal. The gorgeous waitress is hiding secrets she doesn't want him to uncover. Too bad. He’s exactly the man she needs to protect her sister, her life, and her heart. All he has to do is convince her that when something feels this good, you hold on as hard as you can—and never let go.

Laura Kaye does it again, hitting another one out of the park. Hard As You Can, the second book in the Hard Ink series, picks up right where the first book left off.

After her father’s death, Crystal Dean is forced to work into a strip club in order to pay off her father’s debts to a leader of a human trafficking ring. Worse still, she is physically and mentally abused by her boyfriend, Bruno, who is also part of this human trafficking ring. Crystal accepts this life in order to protect her sister, Jenna, from having to work in the very dangerous club too. An amazingly strong and protective character, Crystal takes care of Jenna, who suffers from epilepsy. Despite the fear she lives with all the time, Crystal secretly works on an escape plan, which I just loved about her. Furthermore, she takes an incredible risk when she helps Shane McCallan rescue a prisoner from the club’s basement. Afterward, Shane can’t stop thinking about Crystal. Instinctively, he knows that Crystal is in trouble, and he wants to help her. Shane also knows Crystal is skittish, and he treats her with nothing but respect, which I just loved. But, Shane needs Crystal’s help to get information from Bruno. Crystal, having never met a man like Shane, puts herself in harm’s way to help get the information he needs. As Crystal continually shows her inner strength, Shane can’t help but fall in love with her. His incredible patience and his awareness of Crystal’s feelings and fears make Shane an amazing leading man. Both Crystal and Shane have secrets, and when they share these vulnerabilities with each other, it is a beautiful thing to see. Their sexual chemistry heats up the pages, and their bedroom play is emotional, passionate, and steamy. Along with fostering Crystal and Shane’s relationship, Kaye with her powerful storytelling voice skillfully advances the plot of Shane and his special forces team working to clear their names from being dishonorably discharged.

Hard As You Can is a thrilling, page-turning romantic suspense novel that should not be missed.
