Review: Hard Rules (Dirty Money #1) by Lisa Renee Jones

Wall Street meets the Sons of Anarchy in the smoldering, scorching first novel in the explosively sexy new Dirty Money series from New York Times bestselling author Lisa Renee Jones.

How bad do you want it?

The only man within the Brandon empire with a moral compass, Shane Brandon is ready to take his family's business dealings legitimate. His reckless and ruthless brother, Derek wants to keep Brandon Enterprises cemented in lies, deceit, and corruption. But the harder Shane fights to pull the company back into the light, the darker he has to become. Then he meets Emily Stevens, a woman who not only stirs a voracious sexual need in him, but becomes the only thing anchoring him between good and evil.

Emily is consumed by Shane, pushed sexually in ways she never dreamed of, falling deeper into the all-encompassing passion that is this man. She trusts him. He trusts her, but therein lies the danger. Emily has a secret, the very thing that brought her to him in the first place, and that secret that could that destroy them both.

When I started this book, I was not quite sure  if it would be a good fit for me.  I absolutely love crime stories and I was expecting the author to focus on this right from the start.  It was not the case, it was more about the relationship between Shane and Emily and their intimate encounters.  At this point, I was wondering If the crime elements of the story would only be in the background.  Lisa Renee Jones  proved me wrong.  When the story begins to unravel I was sucked into it head over heels.  Having expectations in regards to a book is a double edge sword.  On one hand, we are excited to read this story and on the other hand, when it doesn’t meet our expectations we are struggling to enjoy the story for what it really is.  What was fascinating is that I was disappointed in the beginning and then it became way better than my original expectations.  The lesson in there is to try to keep expectations at bay when reading a book.

Shane is a typical alpha male. I don’t feel any sympathy for him, but I don’t dislike him either. He is giving orders and refuses to receive a No for an answer. His life is all about work and he does not want to be involved with anyone. That is until he was struck by cupid when he met with Emily. Shane is used to having a life that is all black or white, but with his family questionable actions, he has now to learn to navigate between different shades of gray. Emily is a sweet girl. She is running from something and has a secret that she doesn’t want to reveal to anyone. She is also stubborn as someone and she refuses to fall in love with Shane. The agreement was a one night stand with Shane and she intends to keep it that way. Destiny had other plans for her. Emily character is very interesting, it is evolving in a lot of different shades and the author managed to do so with authenticity.

I rarely saw a family that is as dysfunctional as the Brandon family is.  We have no clue who can be trusted or not and what are the motivations of each member of the family.   Shane’s father has cancer and he is the CEO of a very large empire.  His businesses are not all legit and all kind of problems are beginning to emerge.  Derek, Shane older brother, is on the dark side, he doesn’t care if what he does is legal or not as long as it is easy money for him.  Maggie , Shane mom, is a character that is a mystery to me. I have no clues (and Shane neither) about what she knows and what is her real agenda. Shane is a lawyer and wants to protect his family empire legacy.  He is working hard to correct the course of action of his father and brother With their father dying Shane and Derek are in a war to know who will be ultimately become the new CEO of the empire of BP.  In this first book, all the pieces are carefully placed on the chessboard, opening the way for the books to come.It ended with a killer cliffhanger and  I just can’t wait to read the second books of the series.

This is a really good story and carefully crafted, you won’t want to miss it!
