Review: Once Haunted, Twice Shy (Peyton Clark #2) by H.P. Mallory

Sassy, spirited Peyton Clark is back—and she’s not alone!

After agreeing to let the spirit of Drake Montague inhabit her body, Peyton soon discovers that the twentieth-century French policeman may be dead but his lothario longings sure aren’t. Now she has to find a way to explain to her sweet, sexy boyfriend, Ryan Kelly, that a spirit has taken up residence in her head, whispering French words of affection day and night.

While Peyton is torn between her love for a living man and her growing affection for one deceased, supernatural activity in New Orleans spikes—and something wicked this way comes. With the help of her friends (and a little voodoo), Peyton learns that the demonic spirit of the Axeman may still dwell in her home. To stop bloody history from repeating itself, Peyton will have to travel back a century to confront the Axeman at his roots, with the help of a certain handsome—and suddenly flesh and blood—police officer in the Big Easy.

I think it’s fairly safe to say I enjoyed this second book in the Peyton Clark series more than I did the first. Where Ghouls Rush In was a lukewarm beginning to the series, Once Haunted, Twice Shy is filled with twist and turns that kept me riveted.

Things are heating up for Peyton both in and out of bed. Wink-wink! Finally, Peyton and Ryan have moved their relationship into the steamy boyfriend/girlfriend venue. Of course there is that little problem that Peyton is possessed and Ryan doesn’t know about it…YET! And oh yes, did they actually managed to get rid of the Axeman? The book is certainly filled with exciting drama. Some questions that were left unanswered from the previous book get answered. BUT, those answers just caused more questions which crank up the excitement level about 20 degrees. This there’s a few extra players this time around so not only do we get to hang out with Lovie and Christopher, but we get to meet a very creepy Voodoo Hoodoo priestess, Guarda, and Baron Samedi. I’m not sure what he is but something tells me, we haven’t seen the last of either of them.

I have to admit I wasn’t quite certain of I wanted to continue reading this series. The first book was okay, the second much better so we seem to be on the right track. There is still quite a few unanswered questions floating in the air and oh yes, there is a cliffhanger. I know eventually the happy couple will be Peyton and Ryan but I still can’t help but feel Drake isn’t completely out of the race. So I will sit back twiddle my thumbs and wait for the next book to come out. As for my recommending this book and series, that would be a yes.
