Review: Heart Breaker (Nashville Nights #1) by Erin McCarthy

They’re perfectly in tune—but only when it comes to their music. This sizzling romance from New York Times bestselling author Erin McCarthy follows Nashville’s hottest country music duo as they fight for love in a city where dreams often cost a broken heart.

Self-made singer/songwriter Jolene Hart loves everything about being on top in Nashville. Well, everything except her very public breakup with Chance Rivers, her sexy masculine other half. Once the hottest duo on the scene, they turned Music City on its ear. Now their careers are as cold as their relationship. Which is why their manager has practically locked them in a remote cabin with nothing but a guitar, a bed, and time to do what they do best: make some beautiful music together.

As Nashville royalty, Chance has big boots to fill—and the pressure that comes with ’em. He fell hard for Jolene, but he couldn’t handle the spotlight, the crowds, and the fights that made headlines and killed any notion that love and success could go hand-in-hand. Still, Chance is more than willing to rekindle the one thing that worked: the wild passion behind their hit songs. Soon they’re making up for lost time, in the steamiest ways possible. But Chance finds himself wishing for the impossible: that their intimate hideaway could last forever.

What if you would be in a popular Country duet, fell in love with your partner and then all hell break lose?  That is how Jolene and Chances story is beginning.  Their record company wants them to have their second album ready soon and both of them are not liking the idea of working (or I should say be stuck) together again. They ended being secluded in a cabin and their physical attraction got the best of them.  Being out of their elements, they began to share their intimate stories, a bed and they try to get a better understanding of each other.

This book is all about music, most specifically the creative process of their new album.  I like how Erin McCarthy explored all of these elements.  Add a little  paparazzi frenzy and some juicy gossips and we are in for some star quality moments.  Here and there we find reference to Dolly Parton (the dog named Dolly and the main character called Jolene), that is well thought. Unfortunately, that was not enough to sustain the overall story surrounding it, more specifically the relationship between Jolene and Chance.

Jolene is quite a special character.  Not totally lovable and not mean neither; she is just a red hot blooded woman. The author did a good job to have her appearing human and not a self-centered superstar diva.  She is also aware that she has talents but that her looks play also a part in her success.  She is mainly driven by wanting to keep having her name out there and do some money while she can. She knows that you can be a star today and totally forgotten tomorrow.  I’d say that she is so geared toward her career that her emotions get lost in all of it, she has a hard time to stop and just ask herself the right questions.

Chance is the son of a country legend.  He is not looking for fame and fortune, in fact, he hates it.  To him, it is not so much about having success than to have the chance to work (and have a relationship) with Jolene again.  He never really got over their breakup and he decided that he wanted to try to seduce her again and get back his dog: Dolly!  He developed some drinking problems that gets in the way of his life.. and sooner than later some of his past behaviors came back to haunt him and jeopardize everything is trying to build back up.

Chemistry between Chance and Jolene characters is hot. However, It is lacking some depth at the emotional level.  That is mainly the reason I did not connect with their love story as much as I would have liked to. Bottom line, it is an interesting story, but it failed to get me inspired.  Usually, second chance romance novels are leaving me uplifted and are making me believe that love can happen again. It did just an OK job on that part. Physical attraction was way too present and left wondering if the characters were really able to build some that will last.

The whole book is kind of predictable, which is not a bad thing at all. I got what I was expecting to, but I would have loved to be more connected to those characters.. maybe next time?
