Title: Heart of an Alpha
Over twenty years after tectonic disaster destroyed most of humanity, life is finally beginning to reemerge. Rissa a human survivor and her team have begun to explore and find themselves attacked by armed and dangerous strangers, two of her team are taken prisoner.
Gage and his wolf shifters were out hunting the rogue bandits who were killing the few survivors brave enough to venture into this new world. Then he caught her scent, she was his mate, his wolf was certain; but her group was being attacked by the very rogues they were hunting. Can he save her from doing something foolish, like attacking the bandits armed with automatic weapons?
While preparing to make an attempt to save her friends, a huge wolf stalked up behind her and stood over her growling; then held her to the ground until the attackers left. She thought she was his dinner…she wanted to save her friends, but who would save her first?
He can save her, he can save her friends, but can he win her heart and make her his?
A man who can become a wolf…impossible, or is it? He say’s she’s his mate, is that why her body heats up anytime he’s near? It can’t be love, she’s only known him for days…or can it? She can face the danger next to him, can she handle the rest?

When I saw one of my favorite PNR shifter authors recommending Heart of the Alpha by G.A. Hurst I knew it had to be something worth reading. Checking out the blurb not only did I see that this was going to be a paranormal romance but it was also an apocalyptic flavor. Two of my favorite genres, now how could I pass that up!
I have certain expectations when a story is described as being apocalyptic. By definition, an apocalypse is ‘A great catastrophe that results in widespread destruction or the collapse of civilization’. Yes, Heart of an Alpha does actually fit in that category since most of humanity has been destroyed. However, it doesn’t have quite the horrific side (blood-guts-zombies!) so it’s a little hard to absorb the complete devastation. Instead, it is 20 years later and life is finding a way to survive. Shifters are no longer in hiding and are turning out to be the predominate, and thriving, species versus humans. Once I looked beyond the ‘hey the world fell apart and 20 years later it’s all cool’ business, I was able to get into the story.
The characters in this story were real good with the MCs being Gage and Rissa. There’s a nice chemistry between them that builds up and gets pretty hot. The rest of the humans and shifters were actually very good as well. The humans did come to accept shifters existed rather quickly and didn’t seem to struggle with it too much. I know I would probably be screaming like a banshee! Following along as they battled the Rogues made for some good action. There’s quite a few characters I enjoyed and look forward to them getting their own stories.
This is G.A. Hurst debut book and it was fairly good. Lots of action and adventure mixed in with great characters and world building. Wolf Shifter Series is certainly worth following for any PNR fan. I look forward to the next book.
