Title: High Contrast
The deepest scars aren’t the ones that show.
Jacob Shain is your average member of Generation Screwed. He has a boring internship, no cash flow, and a tiny NYC apartment he has to share with Ethan, his much-cooler, tattoo-artist twin brother. Not to mention his love life is DOA. At least, until his brother’s shop hires on a new piercer, and Jacob’s humdrum life takes a turn for the weird.
Cody Turner is gorgeous, funny and kind—everything Jacob wants in a boyfriend. Except for the way he refuses to talk about his past, or where he lives, or anything about his personal life.
When Ethan is arrested while on a mission of mercy, the reason Cody is so tight lipped comes to light. And while Jacob and Cody fight to understand the depth of their feelings for one another, the police dogs catch their scent. So does the local mob.
Now Jacob has to make the hardest choice of his life: stay safe like a good boy, or dive headfirst into a world he barely understands…and hope Cody is there to break his fall.
Warning: Contains a good boy who wants to be bad, a bad boy who longs to be good, bodies that are canvases for living art and high-speed chases with police dogs.

High Contrast was a great start to a new series. This is also the first Tess Bowery book that I’ve read so there was a lot of new to me going on here. Cody is the new guy at Evolution Ink. The shop has been open for almost three years and the piercer they opened with has moved on. Cody is in between so many things all at once. He’s trying to get a solid footing in his new everything and the last thing he is looking for is a new guy in his life. That’s exactly what he finds though in his new coworkers twin brother.
Jacob is the exact opposite in everything his tattoo artist twin brother Ethan is. Jacob has went to college and got an office job that is really a non paying internship. His body is a blank canvas compared to all of the Evolution Ink gang. Jacob has fully embraced his comic loving geek status. He also knows he doesn’t have a shot in the dark with the sexy most likely straight new piercer that he can’t keep his eyes off of.
Cody, Jacob, and their banter is just too cute. They are both oblivious to the thoughts the other has about them. They each have some insecurities that keeps them from getting on the same page in their little meet and greet. They have some very hot sexy moments, but everything leading up to that point is a really sweet romance. I enjoyed the contrast (pun intended) that was added to the love story with that.
I love the fact that the cover really represents what Cody looks like. I’m always impressed when the model on the cover resembles a character that I’m reading.
Evolution Ink (the shop) is filled with a great cast of secondary characters. I’m dying to know who Bowery has lined up for the next book in the series. A little internet searching revealed the title and scheduled release month. Now I get to impatiently wait a year for the next installment.
My only complaint and it is a very tiny not even real complaint is that this book is only in Jacob’s point of view. Cody is a sweetheart and I would have loved some of these pages from his perspective.
WARNING! This book will make you want to make an appointment with your favorite piercer for a couple of new mods.
