Review: If You Can’t Stand the Heat by Taryn Kincaid

Derek Dunne is a Cordon Bleu-trained food critic for the prestigious New York Monitor, whose scathing review of a popular Italian bistro has driven away all but the most loyal neighborhood patrons.
Lucrezia Serafina DiCicco is a clumsy business school drop-out, working as a chef and scrambling to keep her family’s restaurant afloat, after her father develops diabetes and is banned from his kitchen for his own good.
Now, with The Monitor folding, Derek is searching for his next career path and longing to get back to his first love—cooking—while Lu is desperate for an influx of cash to save the struggling restaurant even as her father puts his foot down regarding non-family employees.
Derek and Lu embark on a marriage of inconvenience to save the restaurant. But can Lu ever really trust the man who nearly destroyed her family and once noted her initials spelled “LSD” and her food was like a “bad trip?”
Or will it be their hearts on the chopping block?

Lu DiCicco is forced to take over the family restaurant when her father’s health problems prohibit him from being there. Lu is a business major and no trained chef! That doesn’t stop her from trying everything she can to keep the restaurant going. After a local food critic, Derek Dunne, writes a scathing review of the restaurant’s food, he drives even the most loyal patrons away.

When Derek loses his job to downsizing, he takes the opportunity to explore his first love, cooking. He is a Cordon Bleu trained chef! He contacts Lu about helping her get the struggling restaurant back up to snuff. He knows it will be an uphill battle, but Derek shows her he is more than capable in the kitchen. She is flabbergasted with the delicious food being delivered to very satisfied patrons. But Lu is torn. Although she could use the cash investment because the restaurant is on its last legs, her father is specific about having “family only” as the staff. She is tired and oh so worn down from trying to do it all on her own. She does the only thing she can do. She takes Derek up on his offer to marry him. So what if he is super hot and makes her nether regions tingle with just a look or casual touch? It’s a marriage of convenience she keeps telling herself! Look what he did to the restaurant with that review. She can’t trust him! Or can she??

I loved If You Can’t Stand the Heat! It was my first book by Taryn Kincaid and I really enjoyed it. The way the characters interacted with each other was real. Both fall hard and fast for the other. Lu has doubts and her head keeps getting in the way of her heart. She tries to push Derek away to protect herself. He will come to his senses right? Realize what he’s done? Derek, on the other hand, has no doubts. He’s fallen for Lu and her family. He wants to be with her and doesn’t want to think about his life without her! He gives her time to trust in her feelings and make her see he is going nowhere. He was unwavering in his resolve and I really liked that he chose to do it .

This is such a quick, fun and delightful read. The book just flowed. I read it in one sitting because I had to find out what happens next. Pick this one up! I think you will be happy you did!
