Review: In Your Eyes (Mates #3) by Cardeno C.

Raised to become Alpha of the Yafenack pack, Samuel Goodwin dedicates his life to studying shifter laws, strengthening his body, and learning from his father. But despite his best efforts, Samuel can’t relate to people, including those he's supposed to lead.

When Samuel meets Korban Keller, the son of a neighboring pack's Alpha, he reacts with emotion instead of intellect for the first time in his life. Resenting the other shifter for throwing him off-balance, Samuel first tries to intimidate Korban and then desperately avoids him. What he can't do is forget Korban's warm eyes, easy smile, and happy personality.

When a battle between their fathers ends tragically, Samuel struggles to lead his pack while Korban works to break through Samuel’s emotional barriers. Two very different men with a tumultuous history must overcome challenges from all sides and see past their society’s rules to realize they are destined for one another.

In Your Eyes was a surprisingly good read. I enjoyed the coming of age story of Samuel. It isn’t all about romance. It’s about a shifter, learning to be a man, finding himself and love along the way.

Samuel and Korbin. I liked them. Samuel, not Sam, please never Sam, is one of those sticklers for the rules. Plenty of book smarts, not a whole lot of personality. He’d make a great auditor. Now Korbin, he’s got personality. He is one of those people who walks in the room and makes it brighter. Yup, it’s one of those opposites attract stories, only Samuel had no clue what he was feeling. So the first half of the story is mainly about Samuel’s struggles of how he feels about Korbin, trying to fit in and coming into his own…all without letting anybody know what’s wrong. Luckily, Korbin is ahead of the game, knows what’s going on and is just waiting for Samuel to catch up. And that’s when things get really interesting! Watching Samuel grow, find his mate, and truly become an Alpha made for great reading, enough so I was kind of sad to see it end. Lot’s of little twist along the way to keep me entertained.

Once again there is quite a bit of smuttery to be had. Very nice smuttery and thankfully, it didn’t happen right away. I do appreciate when an author allows the reader to get to know the characters and the storyline first before getting us all hot and bothered. Normally, I would just acknowledge there is sex and move along…unless there is something that would come up as a red flag. In this instance, there is a red flag, as in taboo sex. I won’t go into details as to ruin the story for others because while I do understand what happens plays an important part in the plot, it’s still taboo. Consider yourself warned.

After reading the previous book in the series, I wasn’t holding high hopes it would play out well for me. Thankfully, In Your Eyes did prove to be a decent read. Now I know there is a fourth book to come out and the probability of it not being bad is 50/50. I, however, will not be continuing on. While others may enjoy author Cardeno C’s writing, his work really doesn’t do it for me.
