Review: Knights of Stone: Lachlan (Highland Gargoyles #2) by Lisa Carlisle

As the new alpha of his gargoyle clan, Lachlan takes on a leadership role at the historic peace talks between the wolf shifters and tree witches. Cooperation is crucial to their survival. The magical veil over the Isle of Stone is weakening. But unity is hard to achieve when tensions are running high. So is Lachlan's concentration when a sexy wolf shifter rushes to the talks. Her wild beauty is mesmerizing.

Raina has her hands full with pack problems, from pack mates succumbing to blood lust to animosity toward her species. The source of her problems is clear-the gargoyles. If they hadn't lured the humans to the island with their unconventional rock concerts, she wouldn't have to deal with the fallout. She wants nothing to do with them, especially their alpha. His not-so-surreptitious glances are hard to miss. Nope. Not the kind of attention she needs. She’s heard rumors of the rebellious, attention-seeking rockers--and of their endless string of females.

But when humans come to investigate the wolf attacks, Lachlan and Raina must work together to coerce them off the island. And time spent together sparks a forbidden attraction. If unexpected love were their only problem, they'd be able to deal with it. It's not. Time is running out, for them and their island.

Do you like gargoyles? Sexy gargoyles? How about witches? Wolf shifters? Then look no further than Knights of Stone: Lachlan the second entry in the Highland Gargoyles series. Here you will find them all…in kilts no less! This is Lachlan and Raina’s story.

I think I am having a problem with the men in this series. It’s probably because this isn’t my first rodeo when it comes to gargoyles or alphas. Let me start with Raina. I really liked her. The duel betas for wolf packs was a new concept for me and I found it very intriguing. My mind percolated away thinking what if they (the dual betas) aren’t soul mates or what happens if they do meet their soul mates later on down the road. Yes, the whole two betas had my mind spinning and really had me wanting to know more. As for Lachlan being an alpha…meh. I didn’t get this impression of very alpha-ish actions from him. Okay he’s the oldest brother and is trying to figure out how the gargoyles contribute to the magic vail. While these things are important, it just wasn’t screaming alpha to me.

Putting that aside, the story itself was really good. There’s a good balance of character introductions, and world building that continues in this series. With all they animosity that has been in place for years on the island, character interactions feel very well paced. No forced kumbaya, you can tell there is still quite a bit of suspicions but they are working together for the greater good. As for Lachlan and Raina, they made a nice couple. There was a nice build-up from not trusting to eventually being mates. Bonus points for the sexual frustration, not hopping in the sack right away keep things very interesting.

I’ve read several of Lisa Carlisle and she never disappoints. Her world building and characters always leave a reader wanting more of her works. I’m curious to see where she’s taking Highland Gargoyles series since it actually feels completed. I know there are a few more gargoyle brothers that need to be mated up. So far, we’ve gotten a gargoyle/witch pairing, and now a gargoyle/wolf pairing. I’m hoping there will be a wolf/witch pair in the near future. Maybe… Possibly… Hoping…
