Review: Life After Death (Max Logan #2) by Sharon Saracino

After artfully arbitrating her return from the dead, Max Logan considers her experience with the afterlife a thing of the past. But Max’s success as a temporary Superintendent of Spiritual Impediment was no accident, as she discovers when the permanent SSI shows up in the middle of the night to reveal that Max has a genetic predisposition to a supernatural calling. When Max’s ex-husband and current boyfriend, Roger-the-Proctologist is lost in a plane crash due to an inept Reaper gone rogue, Max has no choice but to venture back into the sweet hereafter in an attempt to rescue him. Throw in a freak blizzard, a hot Grim Reaper, and the last person on Earth Max would choose to save, and Max will be lucky to escape with her own life before time runs out and she becomes a permanent resident of the Between.

Well I have read the Max Logan series in a discombobulated way. I read the third book first, went back and started at the beginning with the first book. So I know where Max ends up at and how it got started, time to figure out what else entails for her journey to her HEA. And as I suspected Life After Death holds the key.

Max has been filling in for S.S.I., Alicia, who has been out on maturity leave. She thinks her duties are all done until Alicia shows up and explains not only was she not supposed to die, but the reason she was so successful as a S.S.I. (without having received any training) is because being a supernatural is in her blood. Her mom was a Retriever and so is Max! She’s not too happy about it and even less thrilled to find out the same G.R.I.M. that caused her untimely death is also the one who caused the plane crash that contained her ex-husband and current boyfriend, Roger-the-Proctologist, as well as his less than likable co-worker, Dirk. Her assignment – to go back to the afterlife, rescue them both before time runs out and she is trapped in the Between. No problem!

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I adore Max. Her cutting sarcasm and quick zingers had me giggling from cover to cover. She’s found love once again for Roger and has grown a bit more as a person. Now she really has to step up her game as now she is on a race to save Roger or lose him, and slimmy Dirk forever. Bleck! He is not an easy character to like. Who am I kidding? Dirk is a jerk! Anyhoo, Max’s adventures to rescue Roger are humor filled and quite daunting. While she battles a blizzard and snake women, Max is as ever her usually charming self. That is to say all spit and fire. There are some heavy subjects regarding death that Max must Kübler-Ross her way through but it’s all handled in a way that, despite my tears, I was able to smile.

If you haven’t read the first book in the Max Logan series, don’t sweat it. Author Sharon Saracino gives you the right amount of back story so you know how Max got to where she is. That said, I think you’d be crazy to not read the whole series. Max’s wit as well as watching her life and journey unfold, is a treat not worth missing. There isn’t exactly a cliffy at the end but, it’s easy to tell life and the supernatural world is not quite done with Max. Life After Death is definitely a book worth the read.
