Review: Magical Mistakes by Victoria Davies

Mikayla knows better than to wield magic when her emotions run hot—and they’re never hotter than when Ciar is firing her hormones and ignoring her advances. Determined to blast the chip off his shoulder once and for all, Mikayla casts a bit of ill-timed, if not well-deserved, magic. The results are as horrifying as they are hilarious. Fluffy and adorable as Ciar is, Mikayla never intended to reduce the sexy demon to a toy poodle. She can only pray she can reverse the spell—and that he doesn’t remember a thing.

Ciar is not amused to find himself in Mikayla’s purse, though it’s difficult to hold a grudge against a woman so obviously guilt-ridden. It doesn’t take long to discover that every time they let the passion simmering between them boil over, Ciar returns to his natural form, albeit temporarily. Taking Mikayla to bed is his vengeance and his pleasure. Ciar’s denied himself, and her, too long. Yet the more time he spends exploring her body, controlling her pleasure, the easier it is to forget all the reasons he had for keeping her at a distance in the first place.

There is just something about a woman that can turn the man that hurt her feelings into a toy poodle that just makes me smile.  When Mikayla transforms Ciar you can’t help but laugh.  Some of the best and somewhat hidden gems to me in this story were the interactions with Mikayla’s sisters.  They were funny and irreverent and just entertaining.  They may not want a demon in their house or family but they do stand by their sister no matter what.

I loved this world! I’m not sure if the supernatural are ‘out’ to the world and/or humans since we only have supernaturals in this story but I loved how they interacted with each other.  Mikayla is a witch and pretty great at it.  Sometimes she loses control, hence the toy poodle, but she is very talented.  I would have liked more magic happening with her and the sisters just to see what they were capable of but what we do get is a lot of fun.  The interactions between the witches and the demons were interesting.  I liked how each supernatural had their own traits and looks.  The demons being big and dark haired and the witches having a certain feel with they performed their magic.

I liked how the relationship between Ciar and Mikalya progressed. After a somewhat impulsive and hot night together they do slow things down.  We get more information about Mikayla’s thoughts and feelings but we still are rooting for them to work out their differences.  I was surprised with the ending a bit.  I wasn’t expecting it but I think it was great for the character’s and offered up some more humor after the darker events with the demons.

I did have a few questions when I finished this story that I wish had been explained.  You learn that demons are immortal, at least that was my understanding.  They could be killed but they lived a very long time.  I was also under the impression that witches were similar to humans in their life spans so I do wonder how Mikayla and Ciar will handle a long term relationship.  Will they have spells to extend her life? Will he age as she does now that he is out of the demon realm? I would have liked some clarification on this point.  I only mention it because it is brought to our attention about the demons living a long time at several different sections of the story so it is something that I thought of.  There were also a few editing issues I noticed but that may be changed before the book is released.

I would love to read more in this world. There seems to be such a wealth of stories that Davies has opened up with her character’s and her world building.  If the new stories included Mikayla’s sisters, even better.  Then we could, hopefully, catch another glimpse of Mikayla and Ciar.
