Review: Marked (Howl #1) by Jennifer James

Five years ago she ran. . .

Kayla is back where she belongs: in Jack’s arms. But after the initial explosion of pent up longing and need have passed, she has to convince him to complete the bond between them.

Ingrained fears sent her running, but the need for her mate and the love she’s denied has brought her back. To be Marked will join their souls together forever, a bond Kayla can no longer live without.

An Alpha wolf, Jack waited for Kayla to return to him and protected her from afar. When he senses her outside his home, he isn’t beyond setting a trap meant to entice her back.

Once he has her, he has to show her it isn’t just her heart he needs.

He needs her trust and with it, her submission.

This was an interesting story of reconciliation: where Kayla had left without a work, she is stalking Jack, hoping he will forgive her. Her human side is warring with the subservience she believes Jack will require from her should they declare themselves mate, and she take his mark.

With interesting contrasts to other shifter stories, Jack has chosen solitude over pack life, and as chosen for Kayla to return to him, her true mate. If Kayla never returned, Jack was prepared to spend his life alone, although ever watchful of Kayla to ensure her safety.

With some seriously steamy sex scenes, and equally telling emotional revelations, the pair is setting the first step on their road to a happy ever after. And the change in Kayla and her attitude toward submitting to Jack was cleverly tested with some light bondage, their declarations of love and acceptance made this a good short story, and a start to the series.

I received a copy of the book from the author for purpose of honest review for the Jeep Diva. I was not compensated for this review: all conclusions are my own responsibility.

Thanks so much for having me on the Jeep Diva today to share my newest release, MARKED.

Oh, this book and I have had a long, rough road together. I can usually turn out a 7500 word story in a few days and have it be reasonably good.

MARKED took over a year to find its way to publication.

It was contracted, and then not. It sat on my hard drive for months at a time without ever being opened. The word count went from 4500 to 9000 and then finally settled in at 7500. I warred with this manuscript armed with a red pen and an entire world built up in my head for it. But like an overdue baby, it just wouldn’t come out into the world until it was good and ready.

The publishing world is a crazy, competitive place. Some authors write two and three shorter stories a month (or more). Some do one big book every year (or five! I’m looking at you George R.R. Martin!). If I’m left alone and have lots of words and stories to tell, I can write at least 3000 words a day.

But it still took me over a year to get this little baby ready to meet the world. Looking back, I can see how MARKED was a training ground of sorts. It’s the first time I wrote in third person. The first time I tried to do a short story. My first foray into light bondage. My first werewolf book! (And I LOVE them and can’t wait to do more.) My first self-pubbed title after putting out some books with traditional publishers.

Geez. I got my cherry popped a lot with this book. (It’s also my first time visiting the Jeep Diva—Hi Divas!) I think MARKED will always have a special place in my heart because of that. Also because I love the characters. They’ve been with me for a long, long time. I’m pleased to say I have more adventures for Jack and Kayla and the friends my readers will meet in the HOWL universe. But first, here’s the blurb for this first installment.

Jennifer James is a crazy lady. No, really. She is. She talks to fictional people every day and lives next to a river made of chocolate. For fun, she hunts zombies while eating beef jerky and sour Starburst jelly beans. Monster movies are her favorite, but she’ll root for the heroine in a romantic comedy too. A multi-pubbed author or erotica and erotic romance, she dabbles in lots of genres and is enjoying exploring the Indie waters alongside traditional publishing.

I hate to say it, but I never really think about all of the work and effort it takes to get a book published. And with as tight-knit as the “romance” community seems to be, I hate to think about such nasty, cut-throat competition taking place, but I guess you’ll have that.

And I’m glad you didn’t give up and that your books made it through. And I’m glad you picked an awesome artist to do your cover art (I LOVE the cover of Marked!).

    • Jennifer James (

Well, I never knew how much work it was until I experienced it myself. Books appeared like magic! 😀

The competition isn’t nasty (usually) but the community is tight knit. And we’re all sorta shouting into the same room, trying to get people’s attention. Readers tend to be very loyal, and once they like an author, they stick with that author. So if you have a release the same day as their favorite writer, more than likely they’re buying that author’s book and not yours. When you then get into smaller genres (like, werewolves or vamps or hockey stories, let’s say) it’s even narrower. Thankfully most writers are really awesome and help each other. We share for each other, point each other in the right direction, etc. Milly Taiden sent me four of her street team members to help me start and build my own. 😉

My cover art was done my Mina Carter. A kick ass writer herself. 🙂 I love her books. Her latest, Melody’s Wolf, has been sitting at like, 350 on Amazon since release. (I highly recommend her book Perfect of my favorites so far this year)
