Review: Night Betrayed (Envy Chronicles #4) by Joss Ware

The world they knew is ashes.
The world that remains is in peril.
And five extraordinary survivors are humankind's last, best hope.

The Change that devastated the earth did not destroy Theo Waxnicki. It
made him something more than human--eternally young, eternally
beautiful . . . but not immortal. When he dies on a mission against the
Strangers, he is lost to the darkness . . . until a miracle lady brings
him back.

Born during the apocalyptic storms and earthquakes that
left the world in ruins, Selena has dedicated her life to easing the
pain of others. But Theo is the first in her care to survive.

Responding
to Selena's tender touch, Theo starts to live again, to feel and desire
again. But joined in a world of terrors, the secrets they can never
share make them targets. And love could be the ultimate betrayal.

It’s been a while since I had read any books in this series and I have been dying to dive back in. Night Betrayed was the perfect book to get me back into this world.

Selena is called the Death Lady and her ‘abilities’ enable her to ease pain of the dying and help them transition into the next world. YIKES! That is one freaky ability. It’s not a wonder why no one wants her around. However, she has other secrets she’s doesn’t share. And speaking of secrets, Theo has a doozy. He survived the Change 50 years before but he hasn’t aged a day. But he can die. Close to death, Theo is brought to the Death Lady and dies. But instead of helping him cross over she brings him back to life!

Wow! This one was just a wild teacup ride from start to finish. So many secrets, so many twist and turns. Seriously, I don’t know whose secrets were weirder. It all starts with Theo dying. No! And Serena bring him back to life. What? Everybody is wondering the same thing… HOW! yes it gets explained but it was still quite the head scratcher for a while. I did enjoy their interactions and as all the secrets came into play and were revealed. The big one for me was the Gangas. I had my suspicions and had been guess the whose but I could never figure out the hows. Let me just say it was ghastly shocking and I did not see that coming! Be ready for a lot of reveals, shockers, and a interesting ending that may or may not involve moving a bookshelf. LOL!!!

There’s quite a few new characters in this story as well as some old familiar ones. As for the old familiars, take this suggestion to heart: this series needs to be read in order. There’s a lot of world building that are associated to The Change and those characters. Reading the books out of order and not following along and each new thing is added to the series will ruin the epic ending Envy and all the survivors are headed to.
