Review: No Bravery (An Unconventional Chicago #1) by T.A. Chase

A man looking for revenge discovers a man who wants to save a city.

Farris O’Laughlin has been back in Chicago for five years. He’d spent the thirteen years before that in a mental asylum after his brother had him committed for ‘insanity’. Farris plots revenge in the way he knows will hurt his brother the most—bringing down the family business.

Darien Shaunessy is Farris’ new driver and guard. He’s around to keep Farris in line…or so Farris’ brother thinks. Darien has his own reasons for working for the O’Laughlins, but Farris wasn’t part of his plan.

When two men from different parts of the city come together, powerful men could lose their wealth and control. They could also find bravery they never thought they possessed.

Chicago.  The Windy City on the shores of majestic Lake Michigan.  Home of such luminaries as Mrs. O’Leary’s cow, Al Capone and of course, Wrigley Field.  Great city, Chicago, with a spectacular if checkered history.  Little wonder that it was chosen as host to this series of stories – An Unconventional Chicago.

Although it is set in Chicago, it is an “alternate universe” or so the publisher wants us to believe.  This is a universe where the city is still ruled by “gangs.”  Crime and payola are the rule of the day.  Protection rackets are common place.  The rich get richer and the poor . . . well, they might be allowed to live, but on the riches terms.  It is not the place an average person would want to live.  This is the setting of this series of books.

No Bravery introduces the O’Laughlin family as led by younger brother Ralph, who prefers to be called “King”.  No pretension there.  Now why is the younger brother in charge?  That is the question that is addressed in this episode.  I don’t want to give away spoilers, but well . . . we are talking crime and corruption here.

Older brother, Farris, is now seeking some revenge.  Have you heard that saying about revenge being best served cold?  Farris has had a long, long time to think about it and plan it.  And, he is cold!

Enter new driver, Darien Shaunessy. That is him on the cover.  The one with the facial hair.  *sigh* (Farris is the other guy.)  Darien has an agenda too.  But, what did he get himself into here?  Did he infiltrate the O’Laughlin family at the right place or did he screw up royally?  Can’t be too bad because he finds himself attracted to Farris, even if Farris in nuttier than a fruitcake.

This was a fun and entertaining read that grabbed me and completely ensnared my imagination. (Did you notice that? *wink*) There was no real cliffhanger, but I just know this story isn’t finished and I can’t wait to see what the next author adds to this saga of An Unconventional Chicago.
