Review – On the Chase (Rocky Mountain K9 Unit #2) by Katie Ruggle

After witnessing a horrifying crime, Kaylee is forced to flee to a small Colorado mountain town and take on a new identity. There she becomes Grace, a dog kennel worker trying to avoid the dangerously attractive K-9 Officer Hugh Murdoch.

When an accident leaves Hugh and his K-9 partner, Lexi, on desk duty, both are anxious for Hugh to heal. Until then, the highlight of his day is teasing the beautiful but mysterious new kennel employee. Their simmering attraction fuels a passionate kiss—interrupted by a sniper’s bullet. With targets on both of their backs, Grace and Hugh will do whatever it takes to stay alive…not realizing the most dangerous threat of all is hiding right in front of their noses.

I have to give this author credit. She really knows how to pull you in to a story/series, drawing it out and yet still leaving you with wanting more. That’s exactly how I feel about this new installment to the Rocky Mountain K-9 series. Not exactly my favorite of hers, but it still kept me interested and wanting more.

Kaylee thought she had met her Disney prince. That is until she witnessed a horrific scene while at a family dinner. Now? Now she’s on the run, hiding from the uncle of said Disney prince. There’s no better place to hide than in Monroe, right? I’d normally agree, but things in Monroe still aren’t back to normal (read the first installment) and Kaylee (now Gracie) finds herself stuck in the middle of a vendetta/assassination. Great.

Hugh is the cute, charming, always cracking jokes K-9 cop that risked his life to save a friend (read first installment). Now that he’s on medical leave for a while, he’s going crazy, still showing up to calls that he’s not supposed to. I mean, you can only watch so much daytime TV, right? But after meeting the new visitor to Monroe, it seems as though he has a new job. Finding out what her “real” story is. Problem? Yep. Apparently someone wants him dead. But is it a local or this new visitor’s crazy ex-boyfriend? Either way, he sure is tired of seeing the inside of a hospital.

This story starts off so good and cute for me. I wasn’t expecting Grace to come clean so quickly and found that once she did, I sort of lost interest. But to the authors credit, I was pulled back in by the drama that unfolds, still curious as to how it was all going to mesh together. Which it does. Although the chemistry between Hugh and Grace is there and super cute, we really don’t get much “romance” out of them until after the half way mark. However, it IS hard to be romantic when someone is constantly trying to kill you. Just sayin’.

All in all, a nice second installment to the series. There is plenty of drama and we get to spend some time with previous characters. Of course there are some things that haven’t been “solved”, and I’m sure we’ll get to that in the next one. Because Jules is about to get another visitor…
