Review: Playing by Her Rules (Sydney Smoke Rugby #1) by Amy Andrews

In this grudge match, the first to score…

When style columnist Matilda Kent accidentally lets slip that she was once involved with the captain of the Sydney Smoke rugby team, she suddenly finds herself elevated to the position she’s always wanted – feature writer. The catch? She’s stuck doing a six-part series on her ex. Still, there’s no way she can turn down a promotion…or the chance to dish the dirt on the guy who so callously broke her heart.

…could win it all!

Tanner Stone wants to be involved in a feature series about as much as he wants to snap an Achilles. But the thought of seeing Tilly again is a bonus—and has him more worked up than he wants to admit. Only he’s not prepared for how different she is – all cool and professional. His Tilly is still in there, though…and he still wants her, now more than ever. All he has to do is charm her into giving him a rematch. And this time, winner takes all!

300 Review

Tired of writing stylist columns, Matilda longs for writing feature articles. When an opportunity arises she can’t say no, literally. It’s either do this six-part feature or you will be bumped down to obituaries. This is something she has always dreamed of but having to interview her high school sweetheart who broker her heart and has obliterated any chance at happiness in her future seems like utter torture. She sets out for revenge but what comes from their “interviews” shows that they have some unfinished business left.

Let’s be honest, I so asked for this book because of the cover! Him being an Aussie Rugby player was literally icing on the cake. I do not do second chance romance. I have only recently read two, including this one, and so far they did not disappoint. As this being my first Amy Andrews’ book I am so glad I was gifted a copy!

Matilda is trying her hardest to ignore the way her heart beats after Tanner. He is her dream guy in every way but he hurt her beyond repair and eight years later she is still hurting. Tanner who seems to have moved on without a look back at “Tilly” realizes that he never stopped loving her and wants her back in the most desperate of ways. Their chemistry is combustible that you can feel the first time they meet after all these years. She sets out to prove what a jerk Tanner really is but ends up seeing the man he has become that she cannot resist.

Overall, I totally devoured this novel! It was perfect in almost every way. One thing that bugged the crap out of me was why she was so hurt. I totally get it and I guess I understand it, but for her to never really asking why he did it even as she grew up. She let all her anger blind her to what really happened. She blamed him for robbing a life they could have had instead of confronting him, especially if that was her character in the first place. Besides my little rant I totally love this series and am excited for a new author to follow!
