Review: Primal Song: Cajun Heat #1 by Danica Avet

Deputy Daisy Picou is not impressed when Ram Reinhardt prowls into town all rock star swagger and big cat ego. She’s been burned by a lion before and has no intention of playing the fool twice. But with one scorching glance the mating frenzy ignites and passion trumps reason. An intense first encounter levels Daisy’s reservations—and most of her living room. And she’s not so sure she minds.

Ram Reinhardt has burned through and brushed aside just about every adrenaline-inducing thrill life’s thrown at him. But Daisy sets the gold standard for a premium rush. Her combative personality should turn him off, but every time they fight they end up in bed, or on the floor, or against a wall—and the sex is always more combustible than the time before. And he’s not about to give that up. Ever.

This book is not the first in the series Cajun Heat without reason: clever, sexy, funny and ripe with the flavor of Louisiana, Avet has created a world where shifters and humans live, love and usually co-exist peacefully.

Daisy is a bear shifter and the Deputy, single but wanting to find her mate when potential arrives in the form of Ram, lead singer and lion shifter. In fact, all of Ram’s band mates are cat shifters, but it takes the right motivation to make these cats purr. Ram is a bad bet, logically, for Daisy’s desires: groupies, endless lines of women, fame, media attention and the fact that he is a lion shifter, just like the one who broke her heart.

I adored Daisy: smart, kick ass heroine with a softer side and a body that is not model thin. Her battles with her inner bear are amusing as she tries to talk sense into it, despite raging hormones. Her tough veneer hides a heart of gold and a gooey center: which we discover all about come the sex scenes that are both steamy and frequent.

Ram was cleverly portrayed, with the influence of his cat side being apparent in his grace and lounging ability. The banter between the two, in fact most of the conversations in this book provide giggles, while sounding completely natural. Then there is the sex: incredibly well detailed, steamy, knee-shaking sex. Avet writes a sex scene that neatly incorporates the dominant nature of the characters animal side with a curious give and take that shows the reality of a sexual relationship and the joy that the characters have with one another.

If you are looking for a new sexy shifter series to read: pick up this one. You can’t go wrong.
